Scientists Discover Stinging Truths About Jellyfish Blooms In The Bering Sea
(Science Daily)

A new study helps explain a cyclic increase and decrease of jellyfish populations, which transformed parts of the Bering Sea--one of the U.S.'s most productive fisheries--into veritable jellytoriums during the 1990s. …(The study’s) results indicate that "anticipated temperature increases in the Bering Sea will not necessarily further increase its jellyfish populations," said Lorenzo Ciannelli of Oregon State University, a co-author of the study.

OSU graduate leads concert to raise funds for China earthquake aid
(Oregonian)

Jay Chen's hometown of Chengdu, China, sits in a lush valley ringed by snow-capped mountains. The valley is so beautiful, the soil so rich and the flowers so yellow, they call it "Land of Heaven." But then the May 12 earthquake struck, killing 68,109 by latest count and leaving many millions homeless in the province of Sichuan. Survivors said it looked like the world was ending. …In the late 1980s, Chen came to Oregon to major in trumpet at Oregon State University. He knew no English and had no relatives in this country, but he chose OSU after meeting one of the university's professors, who was teaching English at Sichuan University.

Report eases OSU money fears
(Gazette Times)

Fears of widespread cuts at Oregon State University were alleviated somewhat Thursday by an updated and rosier state revenue forecast. The previous forecast, in March, predicted that revenues would be $153 million less than was estimated when the Legislature adjourned in June 2007. The Legislature responded by withholding $126 million to pay for state employee salary increases. About $12 million in OSU funding was put in limbo. Now there are hopes the Joint Legislative Emergency Board will release that money when it convenes in late June. “Given the forecast and where it is, I don’t see any reason why they would not release the funds,” said Mark McCambridge, OSU vice president of finance and administration.
