Ore. divide parallels that of Democrats
(Boston Globe)

Democrats (in Oregon) have long struggled to bridge the division between voters in its upscale, urban, and progressive western half with the more rural, sparsely-populated east, where most residents still earn their living from the land. Even as he closes in on the nomination, however, (Barack) Obama has had difficulty connecting with working class whites whose support he will need to win in November and whose votes presumptive Republican nominee John McCain will target. More significantly, because Oregon is a battleground state for the fall, a good showing among blue-collar voters would help Obama demonstrate he can bring them into his coalition, said Bill Lunch, chairman of the political science department at Oregon State University.

Learn about better bones Friday
(Southern Oregon Mail Tribune)

Exercising to strengthen bones and stave off osteoporosis-related injuries is the topic of a free Friday lecture in Central Point. "Better Bones and Balance" is open to all ages but geared toward women and men age 50 and older. The presentation by Oregon State University associate professor Kathy Gunter promotes physical activity for older adults as approved by the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine. Also planned is an overview of osteoporosis, a disease characterized by reduced bone density and propensity for fractures. "There's two ways that we can reduce fracture," Gunter said, " ... increasing the strength of the structure, and you're minimizing the potential trauma."
