Two music students at Oregon State University have been selected as winners of the first Kraft Choral Composition Challenge at OSU. Rebecca Stager, of Corvallis, a senior majoring in piano performance, vocal performance and music education, won First Prize with her arrangement of the traditional spiritual “Were You There.” She will receive a $500 cash prize and her piece will be publicly performed by the OSU Chamber Choir. Josh Seitz, also of Corvallis, a graduate student working towards a master of arts in interdisciplinary studies, with an emphasis in choral conducting, took Honorable Mention with his original setting of the Alfred Lord Tennyson text “Crossing the Bar.” He will receive a $200 cash prize.
A small Oregon startup company developing new technology to convert waste wood and grass into biofuel has won a $100,000 federal grant. Trillium FiberFuels is testing a new method for making cellulosic ethanol from fibrous plant material. The U.S. Energy Department grant last week was the only one made to an Oregon company by the agency's Small Business Innovation Research program. …Founded in 2006 by three former Hewlett-Packard employees and an OSU researcher, Trillium is looking for a commercially-viable way to process cellulose, the abundant fiber that gives plants their structure.
The OSU Wind Ensemble lately has been on a crescendo that will peak June 1 with the group’s performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The OSU band program started in 1891, but this will be the first time a Beaver ensemble has performed in the legendary music hall. Senior trumpeter Nick Webster equated Carnegie to holy ground for musicians. “Everybody that you’ve ever heard of in the last 100 years has played there.”
The University Honors College and the Women's Center are co-sponsoring a Women's Symposium concerning women's past, present and future involvement in the three branches of government. The event is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the MU Council Room. Speakers include State Rep. Sara Gelser; Rorie Spill-Solberg, Associate Professor in Political Science; and Louise Solliday, Director of State Lands for the State of Oregon. There will be light appetizers, beverages and dessert. Come and learn how women are gaining more prominence in our governing system and see what you can do to help in the governing process. All are welcome to this free event.
During the week of May 19 to May 23, the Nutrition Food Management students will be taking over Pangea. This class is for all the seniors in the program and is an accumulation of their course work throughout their program. Students chose themes, selected menu items and will be preparing and serving the entire meal during the event. The hours for lunch service are 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The upcoming American Culture & Politics lecture, "Civilizing Bodies in the Early Atlantic and Antebellum United States," by Kathleen Brown of the University of Pennsylvania will be on Monday, May 19, at 4 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 208. The newly re-established chapter of the American Association of University Professors is pleased to welcome the national president, Cary Nelson, to OSU on Wednesday, May 21, at 7 p.m., in Gleeson Hall Room 200. Nelson is Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois, Urbana. His public talk, “The End of Education: Contingency, Corporatization, and Academic Freedom,” will inform the OSU community about the need for stronger governance of the university by faculty to avoid the dangerous path that universities such as OSU are taking - corporatization, the reduction of tenure, and the taking away of faculty freedoms.
The annual Student Design Exhibition and Fashion Show at Oregon State University will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, at OSU’s CH2M-Hill Alumni Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is celebrating the centennial anniversary of design at OSU with the theme, “A Century of Design: Celebrating 100 years of the Design and Human Environment Departments.” This is the fourth year of the fashion show, which is organized by students in the Department of Design and Human Environment in the College of Health and Human Sciences.
Starker Lectures series presents a Capstone field trip on Thursday, May 29. The all day field trip to the Oregon Coast Range will leave OSU College of Forestry at 8 a.m. and return at 4 p.m. Pre-registration is required by Friday, May 23, at http://www.cof.orst.edu/starkerlectures/registration.php.
The OSU Campus Coalition Builders is playing host to a campus community forum in an exploration of and respectful conversation about the cost of racism to White, Caucasian or European Americans. This session will be on Thursday, May 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in MU 206 and is specifically designed for White, Caucasian or European Americans who are interested in an open and direct discussion of the subject with others of like racial identity. International Speaker’s Series presents “You Can’t Go Home Again?” Jeehye Lee’s story of the return to her native country, South Korea, on a study abroad program after nine years of living in the U.S. Sponsored by International Student & Faculty Services and International Degree & Education Abroad. A workshop on “concept-based instruction” to promote active learning in the classroom will be held Wednesday, May 21, at Oregon State University. Supported by the L.L. Stewart Scholar Program, the interactive workshop will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Owen Hall Room 241. It is designed for OSU faculty but is also free and open to the public, and will be presented by Milo Koretsky, associate professor of chemical, biological and environmental engineering.
The second annual Forest Science Graduate Student Symposium will be on Friday, May 30, from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Richardson 107. Dan Binkley from Colorado State University and Nate McDowell from Los Alamos National Laboratory, who are OSU alumni, will be the keynote speakers. OSU boasts almost 50 new books published by faculty this past year. On Tuesday, May 20, at 2:30 p.m., join Vice President for University Advancement’s Luanne Lawrence in the Valley Library’s Willamette Classroom to celebrate these authors and their contributions. Also, listen to several writers speak about their work and enjoy some healthy refreshments. The OSU Bookstore will be selling books and there will be an opportunity for guests to get autographs.
The Women’s Center is plays host to a brown bag luncheon with Patty Seybold on Thursday, May 22, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. She will discuss her work in the field of open innovation and will draw ideas from her most recently published book, “Outside Innovation: How Your Customers will Co-Design Your Company’s Future.”
The SMILE Program (Science and Math Investigating Learning Experiences) is celebrating its 20th year. Part of OSU’s College of Education, the SMILE program has grown from serving 80 students in four middle schools in 1988 to serving over 700 students and 66 teachers in 35 schools. Oregon State University is about to embark upon an Integrated Marketing Communications Strategy and Plan that will help us look comprehensively at the way we talk about and brand the university. University Advancement, with the guidance of Lipman Hearne, a national higher education marketing firm, is seeking tenure track faculty who are willing to talk about their perspectives and concerns about our brand image, reputation management and other ways we need to broaden understanding of our university nationally. The Spring Term 2008 Enrollment summary provides information on the fourth week enrollment numbers for this spring and is now available at http://oregonstate.edu/admin/aa/ir/enrollmentsum.html. The overall enrollment headcount rose slightly over Spring Term 2007, showing an increase in the number of undergraduate and first professional students, while the number of graduate students enrolled this spring decreased. U.S. minority and international student enrollment continues to grow at OSU, and OSU Ecampus also saw a sizeable increase in its enrollment over the previous spring.
During “Get There Another Way Week,” May 19 through May 23, the City of Corvallis and OSU encourage you to leave your single occupancy vehicle at home and commute to work or school by taking the bus, walking, bicycling, telecommuting, skating, carpooling or vanpooling. The City of Corvallis is playing host to a public hearing on revised Corvallis Transit System bus routes that will be implemented late summer 2008. Some of the revised routes concern service to the OSU campus. A public hearing will be held to gather community input on the proposed changes, and everyone is invited to attend. OSU’s Extended Campus (Ecampus) is hosting a Spring Faculty Forum to showcase current Ecampus instructors’ personal experiences and best practices of online course development and innovative teaching methods. A road construction project, consisting of street replacement and adjacent site improvements for 14th and 15th Streets between Jefferson and Monroe Streets, and portions of Jefferson Way on the OSU campus is anticipated to start between the last week in May, and the first week in June. Expect traffic delays, flaggers, and some closures during this project. The projected completion date for all aspects of the construction is Oct. 15, 2008.
