Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media.
A lawsuit against Oregon State University and its state-sponsored Team Oregon Motorcycle Safety program — filed by a rival nonprofit motorcycle training group in December 2006 — was dropped last week. Neither party will pay compensation, costs or fees to the other, and Team Oregon can continue using its current curriculum. However, Team Oregon no longer can license its copyrighted materials to other entities. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation, based in California, had claimed that OSU misappropriated its training materials, prepared derivative works and sought to provide these to other states and organizations.
…Researcher K.K. Barker at Oregon State University studied the role electronic support groups play in consumer-driven medicalization by observing an online fibromyalgia support group for a year. Barker found a growing influence of lay expertise in the face of medical uncertainty. Barker acknowledged how the "routine practices of this electronic community simultaneously (and paradoxically) challenge the expertise of physicians and encourage the expansion of medicine's jurisdiction."
A new study helps explain a cyclic increase and decrease of jellyfish populations, which transformed parts of the Bering Sea--one of the U.S.'s most productive fisheries--into veritable jellytoriums during the 1990s. …(The study’s) results indicate that "anticipated temperature increases in the Bering Sea will not necessarily further increase its jellyfish populations," said Lorenzo Ciannelli of Oregon State University, a co-author of the study.
James Carlton, a world renowned marine scientist, will present a seminar, "Marine Bioinvasions: A Story of Maritime History, Marine Science, and Environmental Policy," from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Richardson Hall, 107. Listen and participate in a roundtable discussion involving experts in solar, wind, waves, biomethane, algae, biodiesel, CoGen, and conservation, as well as three professionals in the energy business on Monday, June 2, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Wilkinson Hall, 235. The first hour will involve a brief presentation from each of the participants, followed by a short break, then intra-group discussion as well as audience participation.
The 2008 Senior Send-Off celebration will take place on Thursday, June 5, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the CH2M Hill Alumni Center Ballroom. Hosted by the OSU Student Alumni Association, the Send-Off will be themed “Vegas Night.” This event is free and will be a night filled with casino activities, hors d’oeuvres and pizza, beverages and a cash bar, DJ MOOG, and a raffle. There will be many prize give-aways, including gift certificates and an iPod. An OSU sound permit has been issued to Student Leadership and Involvement for the "Beaver Community Mad Props Gala 2008" on Wednesday, June 4, from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The Student Sustainability Initiative will be hosting an "End of the Year Bash" on Thursday, June 5, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Student Sustainability Center on 738 SW 15th Street. Staff and students are encouraged to drop by to enjoy food and a slideshow, as well as meet incoming staff and say goodbyes to outgoing staff.
Michelle Kinzel, graduate student in the Geosciences, in conjunction with Michael Solem, of the Association for American Geographers and the EDGE (Enhancing Departments in Geography Education) Program, will be hosting two workshops for future college professors and academic professionals on Tuesday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Wilkinson 235. This workshop is free and the first 20 who sign up for each session will be eligible for a $100 honorarium, to be granted upon completion of a reading assignment and submission of a post-workshop evaluation questionnaire. Oregon State University’s men’s a cappella ensemble, Outspoken, will host its sixth annual spring finale concert on Saturday, May 31, at 8 p.m. in Milam Auditorium. John Buckhouse is retiring as of June 30 with 33 years of service at Oregon State University. The English Language Institute at OSU is in urgent need of volunteer conversants for the 2008 summer session. Conversants meet with a group of four to six international students from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. once a week during the work week so the ELI students can practice speaking English. Conversants pick the day they would like to meet during the week and meet six or seven times during summer term -- June 30 through Aug. 8. The 14th and 15th streets project consists of street replacement and adjacent site improvements between Jefferson and Monroe streets and portions of Jefferson Way on the OSU Campus. The work is anticipated to start the first week in June and the projected completion date for all aspects of the project is Oct. 15. Expect traffic delays, flaggers, and some closures (up to 30 days) of Jefferson, 14th and 15th streets. For access to and from campus from the east, it is anticipated that traffic will divert to 9th Street, Washington Way, Benton Place, and 26th Street.
