Former students get degrees at last

OSU’s commencement ceremony recognized 42 Japanese-American students removed from Corvallis during World War II, and honorary degrees were presented to 23 of them. OSU’s 139th Commencement was marked by bagpipes, military pomp, colorfully costumed graduates, cheering crowds and one unexpected arrival as hard-earned degrees were conferred to more than 4,000 students at Reser Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

For new Oregon college grads, the jobs are out there

Grads defy limits

Three years ago, Shaun Reimers enrolled at Oregon State University because he knew he needed to change his career. An illustrator who drew storyboards for Nickelodeon cartoons and video games, he was living his childhood dream. But a family history of blindness has pursued Reimers for most of his life.

Local TV coverage of graduation ceremony

Oregon State University awarded nearly 4,600 degrees Sunday at its commencement service, said KVAL-TV. KMTR-TV has video of the event on its Web site. In Bend, OSU-Cascades gave out its 1,200th diploma Saturday afternoon, said KTVZ-TV.


Today on Campus


The OSU Libraries Interlibrary Loan department will make changes to the format of their Web page and request forms on Monday, June 16. The process to place an ILL request will remain the same. The Research Office is accepting applications for the Undergraduate Research, Innovation, Scholarship and Creativity (URISC) for the Fall 2008-09 solicitation. Applications are due in the Research Office by Monday, June 16. Upcoming Events


Beginning on Monday, Oct. 13, OSU parking permits will be required to park in the Campus Way and 30th Street (gravel) parking lot from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The lot includes faculty/staff and student/visitor sections. Please note this change, as the lot has provided “open” (free) parking for OSU students and visitors over the past couple of years as well as limited faculty/staff permit parking. At that time, there will no longer be open (free) parking on the OSU campus. The free OSU Shuttle provides 15 minute service from this lot to many campus destinations. The OSU Beaver football team takes on the University of Southern California Trojans at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25. In order to accommodate our football guests while reducing the impact on current OSU parkers, OSU Athletic Department and Transportation and Parking Services will implement a phased-in parking schedule beginning with the arrival of our RV patrons on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 24. News for Employees


The OSU ID Center will be unable to produce ID cards on Tuesday, June 17, due to a computer system upgrade. The office will remain open and staffed to answer questions.

Student parking lots will be free from Monday, June 16, to Friday, June 27. No permits are required. Pay and display machines will also be closed. If you have questions please contact Transit and Parking Services at 541-737-2583.

Printing and Mailing Services will move to summer hours beginning Monday, June 23, and running through Friday, Sept. 5. Summer hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The SMILE Program at Oregon State University is seeking a Programs Coordinator. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and implementing youth and adult science and math enrichment activities. This is a full-time, 12-month, fixed-term position with renewal at the discretion of the supervisor. Construction, traffic and maintenance


Due to annual maintenance on the campus steam distribution system, Facilities Services will need to temporarily shut down all steam services to the campus, beginning at 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 15 and restoring services by noon on Friday, June 20. This will affect all hot water and heating services. If you have any questions concerning the steam shutdown, you may contact Les Walton at 737-4395.

Due to work on the storm sewer system, the Dryden Hall parking lot will be temporarily shutdown on Monday, June 16. It is expected to reopen by 6 p.m. on Friday, June 20. This is the lot immediately south of Dryden, on the corner of Washington Way and the southbound lane of 30th Street.
