OSU grad gives back
(Democrat Herald)

Jacob Wester wanted to improve on his one term of college Spanish at OSU, so he went to South America. He wanted to experience a leadership role in the Greek system, so he founded a new chapter of Delta Sigma Phi. He wanted to stay involved with sports, so his new fraternity formed teams to play in OSU’s intramural leagues. All of them. All year round. That’s the kind of drive that earned Wester, 21, the Waldo-Cummings Outstanding Student Award for top scholastic honors at OSU, and the Drucilla Shepard Smith Award for maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average. “If I had a 3.99 right now because I had a B this term, I would probably retake that class,” he said. “I don’t know. I always try to strive for the highest I can obtain.” Wester is the son of Ken and Susie Wester of Albany and a 2004 graduate of West Albany High. He will finish four years at OSU at Sunday’s commencement ceremony, 1 p.m. at Reser Stadium, graduating with a major in biology and minors in Spanish and chemistry.

Underwater volcano eruption caught on camera
(Discovery.com)

More than 1,800 feet beneath the Pacific Ocean, the eruptions of an undersea volcano have revealed themselves on film, including the ejection of glowing red lava and the sounds of exploding gases. "It's the first place where we've been able to observe an active volcanic eruption underwater," said Bill Chadwick of the Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, who led the group that observed the volcano with a remotely operated vehicle. "Even though we think about 75 percent of the world's volcanic activity happens underwater in the ocean basins, it's a lot harder to see and detect."

Null physics declared a ''significant contribution'' to modern physics
(Forbes)

People are doubting the most fiercely held paradigm of modern physics - the Big Bang. According to the June 7-13 issue of New Scientist magazine, author Michael Brooks concludes that physicists may be forced to go back to the drawing board to develop better models to describe cosmic events. Null Physics may be the undoing of the Big Bang. With Null Physics, Terence Witt (founder and former CEO of Witt Biomedical Corporation, BSEE from Oregon State University) presents an intricate, four-dimensional expression of our universe in which energy and space constitute existence. Most importantly, the universe is infinite and eternal; it did not begin with a bang nor will it end with a whimper. With his analysis, Witt hopes to increase the public's awareness of fatal flaws in the Big Bang theory and to propel them to ask questions that lead to logical conclusions.

Today on Campus

OSU’s Faculty Senate is asking for people to take a brief survey at https://surveys.bus.oregonstate.edu/BsgSurvey2_0/main.aspx?SurveyID=2568 to assist it in determining whether changes to the Baccalaureate Core Curriculum are important. If the initial faculty response to the survey indicates that an in-depth review of the current baccalaureate core is timely, a review process will be developed to enable meaningful input and involvement. Please respond to the survey by June 13, so your input can be included in the analysis. If you have questions about the survey, please contact Vickie Nunnemaker at vickie.nunnemaker@oregonstate.edu.
