Oregon State University ranked second among Pacific-10 Conference schools and seventh nationwide in a recent study on gender equity in college athletics. The fifth Gender Equity Scorecard, which pertained to the 2005-06 academic year, graded 115 Division I colleges. Oregon State was among 11 colleges receiving an "A" grade. The University of Oregon, ranking 97th, was among 19 to receive an "F" grade. Charles L. Kennedy, a professor at Penn State York conducted the study. The scorecard graded the colleges on five criteria relating to women's athletics: participation, scholarship money, coaches' salaries, recruitment budget and operating expenses.
Nine months after taking over as acting director at the National Museum of Natural History, biologist Paul G. Risser has announced he is returning to an academic post in Oklahoma. Risser, 68, joined the staff last April after Cristian Samper, the museum's director, was named acting secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Risser goes back to the chairmanship of the University of Oklahoma Research Cabinet and will also be executive director of Economic Development Generating Excellence, a fund created by the state legislature to promote research and new business. He has been president of Oregon State University and Miami University of Ohio.
Seattle-based CleverSet, whose technology helps online retailers recommend products to customers based on their shopping patterns, has entered into an agreement to be acquired for about $10 million in cash by Art Technology Group of Cambridge, Mass. Chief Executive Todd Humphrey said the return to investors and employees is "extremely positive." CleverSet founder Bruce D'Ambrosio, a former Oregon State University computer science professor and an expert in artificial intelligence, plans to stay on as vice president and chief architect of on-demand personalization. CleverSet boasts 85 customers, including Overstock.com, Wine Enthusiast and Cutter & Buck. The startup claims that it can boost revenue per user to Web sites by 20 percent to 60 percent.
Congratulations to Kenneth Winograd and Roni Sue, both award winners at Monday’s MLK Celebration 2008 Peace Breakfast. Winograd, an associate professor in the College of Education and founder of the “White Men Examining Their Racism” study group, was named the winner of the Phyllis S. Lee Award, while Sue, a program assistant in OSU’s Difference, Power and Discrimination Program, was the recipient of the Frances Dancy Hooks Award, presented to an OSU individual who shows courage in promoting diversity.
The campus community is invited to attend a special presentation by Lipman Hearne, a consulting firm contracted through University Advancement to assess the attitudes, opinions and perceptions of key opinion leader groups in regard to Oregon State University. An open campus-wide presentation will be made on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the Memorial Union Journey Room. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend to hear how OSU is perceived by legislators, media, donors, alumni, the business community, other university presidents and funding agencies. The Office of Sponsored Programs is offering “NSF FastLane,” a workshop to help those seeking NSF grants work with the National Science Foundation’s electronic proposal submission system, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in MCC 201. Attendees will utilize their own FastLane account to learn how to perform functions including preparing a budget, uploading a project narrative, and applying for a no-cost extension. The Ethnic Studies Department is proud to announce a three-part “Noon Speakers Series” highlighting contributors to “Seeing Color: Indigenous Peoples and Racialized Ethnic Minorities in Oregon,” a new book edited and published by faculty of the Ethnic Studies Department. The series kicks off Thursday, Jan. 24, with a talk by Ed Edmo and Lani Roberts at noon in the Memorial Union, Room 211, the American Indian Room. Pizza will be provided, and all are welcome to attend, free of charge.
The Microsoft Truck is coming to OSU on Thursday, Jan. 24, offering students, staff and faculty a hands-on, interactive environment with experts available to answer questions about Microsoft products. The truck is being hosted by the College of Business and the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. It will be parked between Bexel and the Kelley Engineering Center. The third-annual gymnastics “Pink-Out” meet, designed to raise money and awareness for breast and cervical cancer, is set for Friday, Jan. 25. The first 1,000 fans to enter Gill Coliseum will receive a free “Pink-Out” t-shirt at the door, compliments of the Corvallis Clinic and Samaritan Health Services, proud supporters of OSU Athletics and the annual Pink-Out event. This year, in addition to the “Pink-Out” gymnastics meet, the Gymnastics Booster Club and the 10.0 Club, will be hosting a "Pink Out" breakfast and silent auction on Saturday, Jan. 26. All proceeds from this event will benefit two local charities: WISH (Women Investing in Samaritan Health) and Project HER (Help. Enlightenment. Resources.). WISH is a program that works with the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation in Corvallis to support the health care needs of area women and children. Project HER is a network of breast cancer survivors who work through the Corvallis Clinic Foundation to provide support to women recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
