Oregon State fires basketball coach Jay John
(USA Today, others)

Oregon State University has fired head basketball coach Jay John in his sixth year after a disappointing series of seasons, especially in the Pac-10. Teams under John, 49, were 72-97 but only 26-68 in conference play. The team is 6-12 this season and 0-6 in conference play. Assistant coach Kevin Mouton is serving as interim head coach while an immediate search is conducted.

State keeps slide risks to itself
(The Oregonian)

State geologists predicted the landslide that crushed homes and severed U.S. 30 west of Clatskanie, but the state shelved the information partly because of concerns it would interfere with land development. The prediction was spelled out in the form of landslide hazard maps that state geologists drew up for all of western Oregon after landslides killed five people in 1996. The maps labeled most of the area involved in last month's U.S. 30 slide as posing "very high" or "extreme" landslide hazard -- the highest possible categories of risk. They showed the danger extending from Oregon State University clear-cuts where the destructive chain of events began, downhill to an old earthen railroad crossing that allowed mud and debris to collect for more than a week, forming a lake. The debris finally broke loose Dec. 11, releasing a muddy torrent into homes that sat in the danger zone.

Seeking back pay on the American dream
(The Oregonian, Gazette-Times)

Judith Pitre was well aware of the Portland Housing Authority's racist history. For 33 years, she worked for the same agency that had colluded to keep her family and other African Americans from owning their homes and from living where they pleased. Until she retired in 2006, Pitre, 60, oversaw a program set up to help the poor -- many of them black -- get off housing assistance and into homes of their own. But it often seemed hopeless. … Housing discrimination so hobbled the lives of African Americans that the government should pay reparations, say two Oregon State University professors. In their study, "Housing Discrimination as a Basis for Reparations," recently published in Public Affairs Quarterly, philosophy professor Jonathan Kaplan and political scientist Andrew Valls argue that government discrimination played a key role in the wide gap in wealth between white and black Americans that exists today.
