University's economic footprint: $1.5 billion
(Gazette Times)

Oregon State University estimates its economic footprint exceeds $1.5 billion per year, and is more than any other university or college in the state, according to university officials. “We often point with great pride to the contributions that Oregon State University makes to the progress of science and to the education of our students, but less frequently recognize the impact OSU has from an economic standpoint," OSU President Ed Ray — himself an economist — said in an OSU press release. The economic footprint includes the dollars that are spent and increased in the economy across the state as a result of OSU's presence in the state.

Ants forced to con birds in worm's 3-way reproductive strategy
(San Francisco Chronicle, Reuters)

Science writer David Perlman examines a study from researchers at four universities, including OSU’s George Poinar Jr., that documents a nematode’s novel reproductive strategy, which uses ants and birds “to spread its progeny far and wide.” "It's just crazy that something as dumb as a nematode can manipulate its host's exterior morphology and behavior in ways sufficient to convince a clever bird to facilitate transmission of the nematode," said UC Berkeley evolutionary biologist Robert Dudley, one of the researchers. The study will appear this spring in the American Naturalist, the journal of the American Society of Naturalists.

Wheat: A lot of dough
(Register Guard)

Wheat prices that hit record highs in recent weeks and rapidly rising prices of other grains have left a variety of local businesses — from bakeries to breweries — scrambling to find ingredients at prices they can afford. Some consumer prices have gone up already, with more businesses saying they will follow suit. "World wheat stocks are at a 30-year low," said James Peterson, a professor of crop and soil science at Oregon State University. As the new harvest comes in, prices should soften, Peterson said, but "Where it settles is going to be the big question mark."
