Downtown group to reveal plans
(Gazette-Times)

A group that has been working since August to hash out the fine points of forming a commission to advise the City Council on downtown matters is ready to make its final recommendations public. In the group’s draft report, reports today’s edition, it spells out its ideas on the makeup and other duties of the city’s newest commission. The group should have 11 members, it recommends, including members to represent interests such as Oregon State University, real estate, alternative transportation, parks and housing.

R. Stevens Gilley Appointed Executive Director of Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation
(Hawaii Reporter)

The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, Hawaii’s third-largest charitable foundation accepting grant applications, is pleased to announce the appointment of R. Stevens Gilley as executive director, effective Jan. 1, 2008, the paper announces today. He is former chairman and CEO of Colony Surf Ltd., and is a director of both the Coast Guard Foundation and on the Oregon State University Business School advisory board.

Building A Better Sports Bra

The 1970s were watershed years for female athletes, with passage of Title IX ensuring equality in men's and women's sports - and the introduction of the first sports bra. The advent of cutting-edge technology has made today's sports gear even better, and the leading sports bra company, Champion, is using biomechanical research conducted in partnership with scientists at Oregon State University to test and evaluate its products.

Conditions Ripe For Another Flood

IThe soil is saturated. The snowpack is very heavy. Reservoirs are full. Three governmental agencies are warning that Oregon's wet and wintry weather has set the stage for more potentially devastating floods, the station reported Sunday. The warnings come from the Oregon Governor's Recovery Cabinet, Oregon Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Mangement Agency (FEMA). According to Oregon State University Climatology Director George Taylor, "The conditions are right in the Willamette Valley for a significant flood event."

Ticket sales continue today for the annual MLK, Jr. Peace Breakfast, set for Jan. 21, 7:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom. This year’s featured speakers are LaVonda Wagner, OSU women’s basketball head coach, and OSU graduate student and Daily Barometer columnist Renee Roman Nose. Tickets are $10 for non-students and $6 for students. Children 5 and under will be served free of charge. On sale at the OSU Memorial Union Business Office.

Upcoming Events


Two of the three candidates for Dean of the University Honors College (UHC) will present their vision for the UHC this week. Bill Bogley, currently associate dean of the UHC and professor of Mathematics, will present on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., in Memorial Union Room 206. Andy Klein, currently director of Educational Partnerships at the Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho Falls and professor of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics at OSU, will present on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 10 a.m. to 11:15 am, in the Memorial Union Journey Room. On Wednesday, Jan. 16, the OSU Department of Music will present a master class with Thomas Bagwell, an internationally acclaimed accompanist for classical singers and a former assistant conductor of the New York Metropolitan Opera. Bagwell will coach student singers and pianists from OSU on interpretation and presentation of classical art songs. The event is co-sponsored by Opera Theater Corvallis and will take place at the First Congregational Church, 4515 S.W. West Hills Road, Corvallis, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The class is open to the public and admission is free.

The Dept. of Agricultural & Resource Economics and the Dept. of Economics invite you to join them in wishing Dr. Joe Kerkvliet a happy retirement after nearly 20 years of service to OSU. Friday, Jan. 18, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Asia Pacific Room.
