Fewer than 5 percent of Americans say they purchase green power. But if you want to know what would it be like for nearly your whole city to run on green power, you gotta ask a Beaver. Students at OSU voted last year to tax themselves $8.50 each, per term, and use the funds to purchase green energy to power the campus. The tally for 2007-08: OSU bought 66,680,400 kilo-watt hours (kWh) of green power last year, equal to about 75 percent of total campus electrical consumption, according to an OSU news release. The campus goal is to use 100 percent renewable energy.
An ocean "dead zone" has been discovered off the Pacific Northwest. The water has so little oxygen that it "kills any marine animals that cannot swim or scuttle away," says Jane Lubchenco of Oregon State University in the April issue. She and her colleagues analyzed 60 years of data and found that oxygen levels dropped in 2002. Most of the hundreds of dead zones worldwide are caused by pollution. But this one was caused by winds and currents that disrupted the ecosystem and fueled oxygen-depleting bacteria.
In a state like Washington that’s filled with forests and has long been synonymous with forestry, it’s easy to imagine that students would line up to get their degrees in the high-demand field. But Washington State University’s program, the only accredited undergraduate one of its kind in the state, has roughly 20 students who are majors, down from about 50 a decade ago. …Keith Blatner, chair of natural resource sciences at WSU, and Hal Salwasser, dean of OSU’s College of Forestry, said they both have noticed other natural resources disciplines across the country facing similar enrollment problems. Oregon State’s program, which offers various courses of study relating to forest resources, has bucked that trend over the last five years, having grown 30 percent to roughly 600 undergraduates, according to Salwasser.
Holocaust Memorial Week continues at 7:30 p.m., Austin Auditorium, LaSells Stewart Center, with a talk by Thomas "Toivi" Blatt, “Genocide and Resistance in the Holocaust.” Blatt will discuss his experiences during World War II. Blatt endured many hardships during these years, particularly at Sobibor, an extermination camp where perhaps 250,000 Jews were gassed. But he also participated in the uprising and escape of October 1943, an event that, aside from the Warsaw Ghetto Rising of April-May 1943, is the best-known act of defiance by the Jews during the Holocaust. Blatt was one of about 300 prisoners to escape from Sobibor; only about fifty survived the war, and only seven are known still to be alive.
