OSU to offer 1,500 students new tuition grant
(Gazette Times)

Oregon State University is leveraging state and federal financial aid packages in a new program that will allow 10 percent of its in-state students — about 1,500 people — to attend the university without paying tuition or fees. “We’re pretty excited. Tuition costs and the costs associated with a college education are pretty daunting for many of our students,” said OSU President Ed Ray. “Some pretty extraordinary people come from pretty ordinary circumstances, and they need help to get their education. But then they accomplish extraordinary things.” The program, called “Bridge to Success,” starts this fall, and students already at OSU would be eligible. The university is identifying students with the greatest need who would qualify for the additional grant money. The aid would not have to be repaid. Award amounts will vary, but could be as much as $4,800 annually on top of federal and state financial aid, said Emilio Vejil, OSU director of financial aid. Tuition and fees for three terms next year is expected to total about $6,125, he added.

Campaign trail gets bumpy for Chelsea Clinton
(Los Angeles Times)

For the first time, she is facing the kind of scrutiny that has bedeviled the candidates and their surrogates along the campaign trail. … [Still,] Chelsea Clinton is considered by the campaign to be one of her mother's most effective surrogates. Though her father is a bigger draw, former President Clinton's tendency to engage his wife's critics has backfired, costing her. Chelsea Clinton, on the other hand, never utters the word "Obama" in her appearances. "She's doing a wonderful job speaking," said Laura Bradley, a 19-year-old Oregon State University student. "She knows so much. I'm feeling persuaded." Mostly, her voice is low, slightly raspy like her dad's, and curiously monotone. "She's very eloquent, but she's very flat," said Lauren Dillard, editor in chief of Oregon State University's newspaper, the Daily Barometer, as she listened under the vaulted ceilings of the student union's elegant lounge.

Seven from Corvallis popped in drug bust
(The Oregonian)

Police from Albany, Corvallis and the Benton County sheriff's office arrested seven Corvallis men, six of them allegedly OSU students, over two days earlier this week on accusations including distributing cocaine, marijuana and Ecstasy after a month-long investigation. Police allege that they purchased drugs from the accused. Officers confiscated over a pound of cocaine, an ounce of marijuana, 30 pills of Ecstasy and 9,000 in cash. Police expect more arrests. A search warrant was also served at an Albany address.
