Ancient hybrid scrub oak is ancient tree
(MSNBC.com)

A hybrid scrub oak that looks like a tall, overgrown shrub in a Salt Lake City historical park is a rare and ancient tree from a time when Utah and the Great Basin were warmer and wetter. The oak is an indicator that the Earth's climate and ecosystems have changed drastically several times. "We live with a world view that the things that are around us are the way they have always been and always will be," says Ron Neilson, an Oregon State University-based bioclimatologist for the U.S. Forest Service.

(Salem Statesman-Journal)

Apperson Hall project costs increase
(Corvallis Gazette-Times)

The estimated price tag of renovating Apperson Hall and transforming it into the modern Kearney Hall has jumped $2 million to $12 million, said Ron Adams, dean of Oregon State University’s College of Engineering. The increase is due to an escalation in construction costs, most notably in steel, which is in high demand due to massive construction projects in China, Adams said. Related story…

Fraternity prank? Or art thieves at work in Corvallis?
(The Oregonian)

Was it a fraternity prank? Or something more nefarious, like an art heist worthy of a James Bond investigation? So far, nobody knows, but the investigation is on to find out just who hefted a 100-pound bronze statue from the Delta Chi fraternity house at Oregon State University through a window in the middle of the night, and then disappeared.
