Oregon State University will receive $20.6 million over the next six years to lead a component of the National Science Foundation’s ocean observatories initiative. The project is part of a $331.5 million effort involving several institutions to study the world’s oceans. The university could receive an additional $29 million over the succeeding five years to continue operating a costal observatory that will focus on the continental shelf off Newport, which is one of the most heavily researched marine environments in the world.
Researchers have figured out how to give an entire community a drug test using just a teaspoon of wastewater from a city's sewer plant. The test wouldn't be used to finger any single person as a drug user. But it would help federal law enforcement and other agencies track the spread of dangerous drugs, like methamphetamines, across the country. Oregon State University scientists tested 10 unnamed American cities for remnants of drugs, both legal and illegal, from wastewater streams.
Scientists at Oregon State University earned more than $206 million in research contracts and grants in fiscal 2006-07, OSU officials said. Licensing income from OSU's technology transfer efforts brought in nearly $2.5 million, up from last year's total of $2.13 million.

Engineers at Oregon State University have designed a microbial fuel cell that is 10 times more powerful than other versions of the technology.
