Drug use, addiction welcome some to U.S.
(The Oregonian)

Adapting to the United States might come with its own side effects. As Spanish speakers learn English, they also turn to illegal drug use, with English-speaking Latinos reporting illegal drug use at a rate 13 times higher than their Spanish-speaking peers, reports an Oregon State University sociologist who studied Washington residents.

Businessman and wife make $1.7 million donation to OSU
(The Oregonian)

Businessman Patrick Stone and his wife, Vicki, have donated $1.7 million to Oregon State University to help high-achieving students. Stone is the former president of Fidelity National Information Solutions and an Oregon State graduate. Part of their gift will establish a scholarship for top Oregon State students from Oregon high schools. Their gift will also be used to strengthen the university's athletic program, College of Liberal Arts, College of Science and Oregon State Libraries.

Handling Stress Properly Increases Good Cholesterol
(Washington Post)

A man who keeps his cool in a stressful situation helps himself by increasing blood levels of HDL cholesterol, the good kind that keeps arteries clear, a study indicates. And he might be adding years to his life. That finding was a surprise, said Carolyn M. Aldwin of Oregon State University and a member of a group presenting the study Saturday night at the American Psychological Association's annual convention.

Support for wave energy swells
(National Public Radio)

Imagine turning the ocean into a giant renewable energy pipeline. It could meet as much as 10 percent of U.S. power needs, but some who make their living on the water worry plans to harness it will leave them high and dry. (Story includes interview with OSU professor Annette von Jouanne)

OSU food scientist gets national honor
(Corvallis Gazette-Times)

Ronald Earl Wrolstad, a distinguished professor emeritus in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Oregon State University, has received a national award for his teaching. During a conference in Chicago about two weeks ago, Wrolstad was honored with the 2007 William V. Cruess Award by the Institute of Food Technologists.

Fields of promise
(Corvallis Gazette-Times)

Wheat stalks, dried out from the summer, rustled in the breeze Tuesday at Oregon State University’s Hyslop Research Farm, off Highway 20, as a mini-combine chugged through test plots, cutting and bagging grain for study. The Willamette Valley’s wheat harvest is nearly wrapped up, but in a few years, there could be thousands more acres of the crop thanks to a new breed in the fields of gold between Corvallis and Albany.

Practicing sustainability: Students renovating house as social, educational space
(Corvallis Gazette-Times)

There’s a little green house on 15th Street that has suddenly re-appeared, after years of being hidden behind bushes and beneath blackberry vines. On Tuesday, the house was alive with the sound of laughing students, the grind of a floor sander, and the steady metallic thwack of a shovel against dirt in the front yard. The 1920s-era house was purchased by Oregon State University last fall, and is in the process of being transformed into the new Student Sustainability Center.

Science camp gives middle-schoolers a taste of college
(Corvallis Gazette-Times)

Sprawled across the dappled lawn at the Peavy Arboretum, a group of middle schoolers didn’t seem distracted by the Frisbee playing and Popsicle eating going on around them. They were too busy worrying about the public presentation they were going to have to make Friday to care that other people were having fun.

Software speedbump
(Corvallis Gazette-Times)

All over the mid-valley, technology companies of all kinds report that their business is booming, but a tight labor market for programmers and software engineers is holding them back — and putting the brakes on a powerful economic driver for the region just when it’s ready to take off. A growing number of firms are frustrated in the quest to hire code warriors, and they’re turning to Oregon State University for help. “People call me up and say, ‘We can’t find anyone,’ and I go, ‘Yeah, you and everyone else,’” said Terri Fiez, director of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University.
