As the oldest in a family of five children that struggled through the Great Depression, noted philanthropist Hallie Ford must have understood the significance of her final charitable donation. Oregon State University graduates receive diplomas Sunday

Oregon State University will graduate the largest class in its history this Sunday during its 138th-annual commencement. The ceremony, which will be broadcast live over Oregon Public Broadcasting, begins at 2 p.m. in Reser Stadium. Ambassador Mary Carlin Yates, political adviser to the United States European Command and an OSU graduate, will give the commencement address.

Oceanographers study effects of 2004 tsunami quake

A multinational group of oceanographers has completed a survey of the fault zone that caused the 2004 tsunami and early results show that the quake also caused a massive landslide. The R/V Roger Revelle, a 75-meter research vessel from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California, berthed at the Deep Sea Port at Cape Panwa yesterday after completing a 39-day study of the sea floor that involved coring of seabed sediments. The focus of the research, led by Dr. Chris Goldfinger of Oregon State University, was the Java Trench subduction zone off the coast of Sumatra, near the epicenter of the 9.3-magnitude earthquake that triggered the 2004 tsunami.

Student workers honored by Valley Library

Students Nathan Bruner and Derek Han were awarded the Carl E. Totten Award on Wednesday, June 13. The $1,000 award was set up by Winnie Totten in 1995 to memorialize her husband Carl and to help graduating students, working at the library, transition from school to their careers. Both students have worked more than two years at the library. Bruner hopes to work through the summer at the library before he leaves for a job in Japan, while Han will be joining the U.S. Air Force to train in the “Top Gun” program.

Upcoming Events


OSU-Cascades Campus will hold its sixth annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 16, starting at 2 p.m. in Drake Park in Bend.

The OSU baseball team plays Cal State Fullerton in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., starting at 4 p.m. PDT on Saturday, June 16. The game will be shown on ESPN and on the radio on KEJO-AM (1240).

OSU Commencement will start at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 17, at Reser Stadium. This year's commencement speaker is OSU alumna Ambassador Mary Carlin Yates, a long-time diplomat and currently Political Adviser to the Commander, United States European Command. No tickets are required for commencement.

A Celebration of Life for Elizabeth Sulzman will be held on Monday, June 18, at the LaSells Stewart Center. A reception will begin at 2 p.m. with the celebration program starting at 2:30 p.m.

News for Employees


Starting Monday, June 18, OSU Today will be sent out once a week through the summer.

Two sessions of the Roadcraft Advanced Driver Training course will be held on Friday, June 22, in the Memorial Union. Pre-registration is required. Choose either the morning (7:30-11:30 a.m.) or afternoon (12:30-4:30 p.m.) session.

The Valley Library Information Commons computers will be shut down due to rewiring and re-carpeting from June 16 through July 13.

From June 18-29, parking in student/visitor lots is free. Valid staff/faculty permits are still required for parking in staff/faculty Lots and parking in metered parking areas requires payment, as well.

Starting Monday, June 18, the Transit and Parking Services office, 100 Adams Hall, will be open 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Info: 737-2583.

During Summer 2007, the remaining eight staff/faculty parking spaces on 14th Street between Jefferson and Monroe will be decommissioned and permanently removed from service to prepare for the installation of bicycle lanes in Summer 2008. The motorcycle parking space located on 14th Street near Campus Way will be moved to a new location in that vicinity. Info: 737-2583.

Transit and Parking Services is exploring the possibility of changing the display method for OSU parking permits, beginning with sale of permits on Sept. 1, 2007. The three options are: Continue existing hang-tag method; Change to bar-coded decals for rear bumpers; Change to numbered decals for rear bumpers. The deadline for Oregon Literary Fellowships is June 29. Oregon Literary Fellowships provide fiscal support to writers and independent publishers throughout the state of Oregon. The minimum amount for each fellowship has been raised to $2,500. Fellowships are awarded to writers in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama and young readers literature. Fellowships are also awarded to independent publishers. Info: Susan@literary-arts.org.

Reservations are being taken for the 2007 Beaver Community Fair, which is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28, in the MU Quad.


Construction/traffic/maintenance


Due to annual maintenance on the campus steam distribution system, Facilities Services will shut down all steam services to campus from 11 p.m. June 17 to 5 p.m. June 21. This will affect all hot water and heating services. Info: Les Walton, 737-4395 or Gary Hanson, 737-7652.

Due to the installation of new door operations, all freight elevator services in Weniger Hall will be temporarily shut down from 8 a.m. Monday, June 18, to 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 19. Info: Henri Jansen, 737-1668; or Paula Rhodaback, 737-1684.

Due to repairs on the booster heater, tied to the main building water supply line, all building water services in Bates Hall will be temporarily shut down from 7:30 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20. Info: Joanne Sorte, 737-2516.

During the week of June 18-22, quarterly fire alarm testing will be taking place across campus. This is a silent test only, so no fire horns and/or bells will sound during this time. Info: contact building manager.
