Study Contradicts Logging Practices

Logging dead trees after a wildfire and planting new ones can make future fires worse, at least for a decade or two while the young trees create a volatile source of fuel, scientists found in a study that contradicts conventional practices. The findings by scientists from the U.S. Forest Service and Oregon State University and published in this week's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal raise questions about the long-standing practice of salvage logging on national forests.

Beavers rise to occasion

Oregon State changed just about everything it had this baseball season, from the uniforms to the infield to some gaping holes in its lineup. The one thing that didn't change: The Beavers still have the magic. The defending national champions proved it one more time Monday afternoon by making Michigan disappear with a few waves of Mike Stutes' right arm and a few swings of their bats.

Re-creating Seaside

Daniel Cox held up a yellow wooden house about the size of a shoebox, a model that looked plucked from some brightly colored, giant Monopoly set. “This is a residential home. They’re building the hotels right now,” said Cox, the director of Oregon State University’s O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory. But these aren’t fictional buildings. The lab’s Tsunami Wave Basin is re-creating the tourist center of Seaside at a 50th of the actual size so researchers can repeatedly slam tidal waves into it.

Investigation continues in death of beloved professor

Oregon State Police detectives continue to investigate the death of an Oregon State University faculty member who became ill while inside her vehicle on the campus Sunday afternoon and later died at a Corvallis hospital. Oregonian story…

News for Employees


Training and Professional Development Courses has posted its summer workshops for faculty and staff, featuring a comprehensive three-course session on change management and additional Online Recruitment and Position Dscriptions trainings.

The deadline for Oregon Literary Fellowships is June 29. Oregon Literary Fellowships provide fiscal support to writers and independent publishers throughout the state of Oregon. The minimum amount for each fellowship has been raised to $2,500. Fellowships are awarded to writers in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama and young readers literature. Fellowships are also awarded to independent publishers. Info: Susan@literary-arts.org.

Reservations are being taken for the 2007 Beaver Community Fair, which is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28, in the MU Quad.


Construction/traffic/maintenance


Due to construction associated with the roofing project at Graf Hall, access to and from the parking lot at Monroe and 16th Street (behind Graf, Dearborn and Covell halls) will change from June 18 to Sept. 7. Construction crews and equipment will be staged in various areas of the parking lot through the duration of the project. Alternative parking arrangements will be made for those with ADA needs. Due to annual maintenance on the campus steam distribution system, Facilities Services will shut down all steam services to campus from 11 p.m. June 17 to 5 p.m. June 21. This will affect all hot water and heating services. Info: Les Walton, 737-4395 or Gary Hanson, 737-7652.
