Oregon State’s 7-3 victory over Virginia on Tuesday in the championship game of the Charlottesville Regional sent OSU athletic department officials into scramble mode as they made quick arrangements for a weekend NCAA Super Regional baseball series in Corvallis. If the Beavers defeat Michigan in the two-out-of-three series, they will earn their third consecutive trip to the College World Series in Omaha.
After weeks of behind-the-scenes jousting, Oregon lawmakers struck a bipartisan deal Tuesday on state support to universities, boosting spending 22.4 percent. The Ways and Means Subcommittee on Education voted 9-0 to grant $876.8 million to the Oregon University System for the next two years.
It's cool to rally around climate change these days, but taking real actions to cut greenhouse gases is not nearly as easy. bills that would reduce future greenhouse gas emissions are moving through the Legislature -- under less controversial titles, such as renewable energy and energy efficiency. "The cap-and-trade and emissions performance standard legislation both involved very complex issues, and it's clear there is a lot more discussion and education that needs to happen of what the issues are and how these two pieces are an essential part of the solution," said Jane Lubchenco, co-chairwoman of the Governor's Advisory Group on Global Warming and distinguished professor of Zoology at Oregon State University.
Oregon State University has named a new director to its School of Civil and Construction Engineering. Scott Ashford, a 1983 OSU alumnus and former CH2M Hill engineer, received his doctoral degree in geotechnical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and has been a professor at the University of California, San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering since 1996.
A strike by some Carpenters Union members is causing some minor inconvenience for a project at Oregon State University — but it could turn into a major headache if the walkout drags on. About 1,300 drywall workers, acoustic ceiling installers and some other specialists represented by the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters walked off their jobs Friday in Oregon and southwest Washington when their contract expired.

The Oregon State University Theatre will present a series of student-written, original one-act plays starting Thursday, June 7. Performances are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. June 7-9 and at 2 p.m. June 10 at Withycombe Hall.
The College of Veterinary Medicine will graduate an historic class this Sunday, June 10, with its largest number of graduates receiving their professional degrees during the 25th commencement ceremony for the college. The ceremony starts at 1:30 p.m. at the LaSells Stewart Center. It is free and open to the public.
