Oregon State University has named Alan Mix and John Selker as its 2017 distinguished professor recipients, the highest academic honor the university can bestow on a faculty member.

 Study: Oregon high schools lacking ‘best practices’ for athletic emergencies (Medical Xpress)

“We launched the survey to gauge how prepared schools are to respond to athletic-related emergencies,” said Samuel Johnson, an athletic training and kinesiology specialist at Oregon State University and lead author on the study. “We also wanted to know if having an athletic trainer—a health care professional with expertise in —available at the was associated with better preparedness.”

Rangeland researchers urge smaller cows for better herd (KTVZ)

That’s the recommendation of a recent interdisciplinary study involving rangeland researchers in Oregon, Wyoming and Oklahoma. Breeding smaller cattle could be a long-term strategy that will help ranchers and ease pressure on an increasingly drought-prone range, said Leticia Henderson, a livestock and range Extension agent at Oregon State University.

Architect Lin to speak at OSU (Gazette-Times)

American architect and sculptor Maya Lin, perhaps best known for designing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., as a Yale University student in 1981, will deliver the next Provost’s Lecture at Oregon State University on Tuesday, April 18.

Marys Peak geology featured in new book (Gazette-Times)

Bob Lillie, a professor emeritus of geology at Oregon State University, will discuss his new book, “Oregon’s Island in the Sky: Geology Road Guide to Mary’s Peak.”

Tuesday Teaching Talks: Spring into a fresh start of this series! Course Fees Updated:  Oregon State University will take written comments on its proposed updates to OSU Standard 576-010 University Fees through the end of business on Friday, April 7.  The purpose of the comment period is to receive public feedback regarding updates to the Summer/Fall 2017 course fees for certain field trips and courses before they become effective on April 16.  The proposed fees can be reviewed at the Valley Library circulation desk.  Comments should be directed to Susan Barba at susan.barba@oregonstate.edu.

Last Call for Spring Symposium Proposals! If you are hoping to showcase your innovative and creative teaching at the Center for Teaching and Learning’s spring symposium now is the time to submit your proposal. Celebrating Teaching Excellence, is a fun event that fosters reflection, enhances the exchange of ideas, and inspires our collective commitment to our students and the art of teaching. Progressive family-style lunch and rotating conversations are hallmarks of this celebration. On Wednesday, April 26 from 11-2, if you (and colleagues and/or students) would like to showcase your work at a round table, please fill out the short application proposal by March 24.

Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! 15th Avenue: To facilitate installation of the utility connections for the new parking lot at 16th & A Ave, crews will require a closure of 15th Street from A Avenue to Western Blvd for the duration of spring break (March 27– March 31) to make the connections within the roadway.  Sidewalks along this stretch of road may also be affected.  Detours will be in place as shown on attachment.

NEW! Nash Hall: To support a crane pick for the Nash Hall tower fan motor install along with the removal of freezers from Nash Hall, the parking lot between Linus Pauling Science Center and Nash Hall (View Map) will be impacted with a partial closure on Monday, March 27, from 7 a.m. – noon.

NEW! Spring Break Central Shuttle Route:  Beaver Bus shuttle operations will be limited to one bus on the Central route from Monday, March 27 to Friday, March 31. The Beaver Bus will resume regular shuttle service on Monday, April 3. Visit http://transportation.oregonstate.edu/transportation-services/osu-beaver-bus for more information.

Wiegand Hall: The steam will be shut down in Wiegand Hall March 28, 7 – 11 a.m. to make necessary repairs to the steam system.  This will affect heat, autoclaves & hot water building wide.

Parking lot closures: Due to parking lot maintenance the following lots will be closed, Sports Complex West #3286, Benton Hall East #3241, Benton Hall South #3242, West Greenhouse Complex #3320, Vet Research Lab South #3342, Magruder Hall South #3363, and Oak Creek Building North #3364. The closures will be from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 27 – 31 (View Map). The lots will reopen when the work is finished and the area is safe to enter. Look for postings in the lot for specific dates.
