The mystery of Seahorse Key’s missing bird colony veers into strange territory (Audubon Magazine)

Dan Roby, a wildlife ecologist at Oregon State University and a scientist with the Oregon Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, suspects cumulative disturbance is to blame for the mass abandonment of the world’s largest Double-crested Cormorant colony this past summer. In mid-May, somewhere in the span of three days, around 16,000 birds deserted eggs on East Sand Island, at the mouth of the Columbia River.

West faces water shortage, but places like Payson may enjoy a vital advantage (Payson Roundup)

Too warm, according to a study by researchers from Oregon State University published in Geophysical Research Letters, a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The study found that 80 percent of the snow measurement sites in California, Oregon, Washington, western Nevada and western Idaho had record-low snowpack levels, mostly because of high average temperatures in the spring. The warm springs and early runoff will become much more common given the projected rise in average temperatures due to heat-trapping pollutants in the atmosphere, the researchers concluded.

“This a movement that is growing,” said King board member Joseph Orosco, a professor of philosophy at Oregon State University. Orosco noted that officials at OSU, Portland State University and the University of Oregon all have announced that they will be sanctuary campuses.

Freres going big with new facility for ‘massive plywood panels’ (Register-Guard)

Officials at Oregon State University’s Advanced Wood Products Laboratory recently announced that they tested a new type of plywood building panel, developed by Freres Lumber Co. of Lyons, that may be the largest such product ever manufactured.

The forum will take place on Dec. 8 from 10 to 11 a.m. in Memorial Union 207.  The OSU Experience site helps students navigate the vast co-curricular and experiential learning opportunities at Oregon State. It also highlights student stories and provides practical resources that span across campus and campuses. Library awards: Oregon State University Libraries is pleased to announce the annual Library Undergraduate Research Awards. There are two $1,000 scholarships awarded each year: one for a paper in the humanities and the second award for a paper in the social sciences, sciences or engineering. This award recognizes and rewards OSU undergraduates who, through comprehensive use of the OSU Libraries, demonstrate outstanding research, scholarship and originality in a research paper that they’ve written or a research project that they’ve completed. Power shutdown: Pacific Power, our electrical utility provider, has a need to make repairs that will result in the power being shutdown to the following buildings: For this repair to happen they will need to de-energize the circuit that feeds the following buildings: Facilities Shops, Goss Stadium, INTO Building, Navy ROTC & Tebeau Hall. We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause, however this shutdown is necessary so Pacific Power can make the necessary repairs to ensure life safety and protect the integrity of the campus electrical grid. The shutdown will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17 and we anticipate they will restore power by 11 a.m.
