Gov. Brown’s budget falls below higher education’s wish list, but omits drastic cuts (Oregonian)

Steve Clark, Oregon State University’s spokesman, issued a more direct statement of disappointment in the overall budget figure. “Flat funding higher education and cutting funding for the OSU Extension Service and the university agriculture and forest experiment stations is a double whammy,” Clark said in a statement. “OSU will have to consider the prospect of higher student tuition rates and larger classes.”

A new study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology has identified seven distinct patterns or ways that people use to quit their jobs. The researchers, Anthony Klotz of the Oregon State University College of Business and Mark Bolino of the University of Oklahoma Price College of Business, set out to map the way in which employees resign from their jobs by interviewing several hundred individuals. The results were dissected in detail by The British Psychological Association, which provides a bit more insight.

New tool predicts the presence of blue whales (Seeker)

Dubbed WhaleWatch, the system was developed by researchers from NOAA Fisheries, the University of Maryland, and Oregon State University, who have justpublished details about it in the Journal of Applied Ecology.

Moving Multiraciality Forward: Lessons from Researching Race and Mixed Race in Higher Education Contexts:  Marc Johnston Guerrero. This presentation will use findings from several studies on racial issues to develop insights on how to move our awareness of race and mixed race forward. From understanding what race is to how multiracial students experience racial oppression, such lessons are necessary to meet the needs of our increasingly diverse student communities within the larger quest for social justice and inclusion. North American Truffling Society Annual Meeting and Potluck: Takes place at the Corvallis Senior Center, on 27th St. Corvallis on Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be Ryan Stephens, PhD candidate at the University of New Hampshire and 2014 Pavelek Memorial Scholarship recipient.  He will talk about truffle diversity in the Northeast and the mechanisms by which these subterranean fungi disperse.  Ryan’s work investigates the factors that contribute to truffle production in the Northeast and the small mammals that disperse their spores.

There are two $1,000 scholarships awarded each year: one for a paper in the humanities and the second award for a paper in the social sciences, sciences or engineering. This award recognizes and rewards OSU undergraduates who, through comprehensive use of the OSU Libraries, demonstrate outstanding research, scholarship and originality in a research paper that they’ve written or a research project that they’ve completed. Gender Inclusive Restroom Campus Map: Capital Planning and Development has published an online gender inclusive restroom map of campus. Every effort has been made, and will continue to be made, to provide accurate and current data. We welcome feedback on omissions or errors to campus.gis@oregonstate.edu. The map identifies 145 known gender inclusive restrooms, limited access restrooms are not included. All major renovation and new construction require inclusive restrooms, so the number will continue to grow.

Power shutdown: Pacific Power, our electrical utility provider, has a need to make repairs that will result in the power being shutdown to the following buildings: For this repair to happen they will need to de-energize the circuit that feeds the following buildings: Facilities Shops, Goss Stadium, INTO Building, Navy ROTC & Tebeau Hall. We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause, however this shutdown is necessary so Pacific Power can make the necessary repairs to ensure life safety and protect the integrity of the campus electrical grid. The shutdown will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17 and we anticipate they will restore power by 11 a.m.
