Today in the News Media

Today in the News Media is a synopsis of some of the most prominent coverage of OSU people and programs. Inclusion of any item constitutes neither an endorsement nor a critique, but rather is intended only to make the OSU community aware of significant items in the media.

Oregon State is a sanctuary university (LIFE@OSU)

A statement from President Edward J. Ray. (see also Register-GuardDemocrat-Herald)

Kelp forests globally resilient, but may need local solutions to environmental threats (Environmental Research Web)

“Kelp forests are cold-water, fast-growing species that can apparently withstand many types of environmental disturbances,” said Mark Novak, an assistant professor of integrative biology in the College of Science at Oregon State University, co-author of the study, and an organizer of the international group at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis that conducted this research.

Humpback whales learn habitat loyalty from their mothers, Alaska study shows (Mongabay)

The study, led by Sophie Pierszalowski of Oregon State University in the U.S., draws from work first done in the 1970s. Charles Jurasz, a high school teacher in southeastern Alaska, recognized that humpback whales have distinctive markings on their fins and tails. He began tracking whales in the two inlets by photographing them. Today biologists commonly use photo-identification as a research tool, and they often refer to decades-old photos to trace the movements of individual whales through time.

Battling student hunger (Inside Higher Ed)

That doesn’t mean all change concerning student hunger is in perpetual limbo. Earlier this year, Oregon State University and Humboldt State University began accepting SNAP benefits, which are provided to low-income people to promote health and nutrition. The universities needed to make sure that their grocery stores met federal standards, which meant stocking a variety of foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables. Those are rare college success stories, thanks to the long and convoluted process involved in applying for the federal aid program.

Wet weather heralds busy season for slug researcher (Capital Press)

It’s the rainy season in Oregon, which means there’s plenty of work for Oregon State University’s new slug expert, Rory McDonnell. With slugs emerging from their underground hibernation, McDonnell has found that Oregon’s reputation as a haven for the slimy pests is well deserved.

AAAS and Oregon State University announce 206 Fellows (LIFE@OSU)

Three Oregon State University professors have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.

Rockfish siblings shed new light on how offspring diffuse and disperse (Science Daily)

A splitnose rockfish’s thousands of tiny offspring can stick together in sibling groups from the time they are released into the open ocean until they move to shallower water, research from Oregon State University shows. (see also Natural Science News, X-Ray Magazine)

In election’s aftermath, urban-rural divide has never seemed wider (Blue Mountain Eagle)

Dan Arp, dean of Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences, often says food is “the handshake between urban and rural.”

A capella OSU (Democrat-Herald)

The Oregon State University group men’s a cappella group Outspoken sang a swaggering version of Cage The Elephant’s “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked.”
