Coral killers: New work shows how rising ocean temperatures are potentially lethal for coral reefs (Science Daily)

“When corals are so weakened, they cannot withstand normal impacts,” said corresponding author Rebecca Vega Thurber, an assistant professor in the College of Science at Oregon State University (OSU). “The solution will be to help those corals recover their health by ensuring that their local environment is free of nutrient pollution and that fish stocks are not depleted.”

 Temperatures in Pendleton reached 96 degrees on Sunday and 100 degrees on Monday, which has the crop maturing about two weeks ahead of schedule. Open forums are scheduled for the Office of Research Integrity – Assistant Vice President for Research (ORI-AVPR) position: The ORI is composed of 13 professional faculty and classified staff, and provides oversight for all compliance committees of the university. Upcoming events

NEW! Science reception honors record number of graduates: This year, the College of Science is proud to graduate a record 596 students with baccalaureate degrees—which represents a 34% increase from last year—47 master’s candidates and 50 Ph.D. candidates, the most in recent years. The College will host an outdoor reception honoring graduates and their families on June 10 from 4 – 5:30 pm in front of Kidder Hall.

Naval ROTC Commissioning Ceremony: Fifteen graduating seniors will be commissioned into the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. This year’s keynote speaker is Rear Admiral Roy Kelley, Commander Carrier Strike Group 12. The ceremony takes place at 10 a.m. Friday, June 10, at the Student Experience Center Plaza.

Pork sandwiches: The Clark Meat Science Center will be selling pulled pork sandwiches and drinks Friday, June 10 from noon to 1 p.m., or while supplies last. Cost will be $5/meal. The retail store will also be open until 5:30 p.m.

The Integrated Scenarios webpage’s data and visualization tools: Katherine Hegewisch, postdoctoral researcher in the Applied Climate Sciences Lab at the University of Idaho, will discuss the Integrated Scenarios (IS) of the Future Northwest Environment project, which resulted in several datasets describing projected changes in climate, hydrology and vegetation for the 21st century over the Northwestern US. Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Van Buren Bridge closure: The Oregon Department of Transportation will be conducting overnight road work to resurface the Van Buren Bridge, starting at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 12 and ending at about 7 a.m. Monday, June 13. Eastbound traffic will be detoured to the Harrison Bridge. The work is being scheduled at night due to high traffic volume, particularly truck traffic, during the day. Work will include surface grinding and asphalt paving. For more information, contact Douglas Rogerson, ODOT Bridge Coordinator, at 541-967-2056.

26th Street: As part of the 26th and Campus Way Accessibility Improvements project, the intersection of SW 26th St. and Campus way will be closed June 13 through July 1,  to complete the reconstruction of the intersection to improve pedestrian access and safety. (view map) Be advised:  this project will create some dust and noise during demolition.

Commencement: To accommodate OSU Commencement Ceremony activities, the following areas will be closed or impacted during the day. (Street Closure Map) 6 a.m. – 11 a.m. (until the processional goes through campus) the following streets are closed:

  • 26th closed between Campus Way and Ralph Miller Way
  • Washington Way – no through traffic 10 – 11:30 a.m.
  • Benton Place will be open, but no through traffic to Jefferson
  •  Jefferson Street closed between 14/15th to Benton Way 6– 10:30 a.m.
    Parking lots:
  •  Bloss South lot (behind Alumni Center) is closed – access ONLY by special permit
  • Lots surrounding Reser – West side – ADA and mobility challenged parking ONLY
  • ALL other lots on campus are open

Washington Way: The city will be reconstructing the railroad crossing at 35th Street and Washington Way this summer.  During the reconstruction of the railroad at-grade crossing, road and rail work are to take place, which will result in sidewalk and roadway closures of 35th Street July 25- Aug. 26. Additional information on closure details and duration will be shared as information is received from the city.  For questions or additional information, contact Nathan Patterson.

2016: Annual Steam Shutdown June 12 – 15: Each year, Facilities Services performs necessary maintenance on the Corvallis campus university’s steam system, which requires shutting off the steam throughout campus to complete maintenance services at the plant, throughout the steam tunnels and in each building.  This process affects buildings’ hot water supply, heating & all equipment that uses steam. The shutdown will occur June 12 starting at 6 p.m. and end June 15 at 4 p.m.

Hwy 20 Eddyville project update: The road will be open with minimal delays between now and July 15. Expect some delays of up to 20 minutes as the project moves forward. These are unscheduled delays that occur for various construction activities. There will be some brief delays to let trucks on and off of the highway at the west end of the project. Short delays of five minutes or less may also occur as construction signs are installed. To do this a lane or shoulder is briefly closed. Most work is taking place away from the existing roadway.
