OSU-Cascades first freshman? ‘Its kind of a big deal.’ (Bend Bulletin)

At first, Lily Gunter didn’t realize she would be part of the first freshman class at OSU-Cascades. She had applied primarily because it was the only university she could attend and keep living at home in La Pine. The historic relevance hit her later. “It’s kind of a big deal,” Gunter, 19, said this week.

The Integrated Scenarios webpage’s data and visualization tools: Katherine Hegewisch, postdoctoral researcher in the Applied Climate Sciences Lab at the University of Idaho, will discuss the Integrated Scenarios (IS) of the Future Northwest Environment project, which resulted in several datasets describing projected changes in climate, hydrology and vegetation for the 21st century over the Northwestern US. NEW! Financial Aid: The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships (OFAS) will  temporarily move to University Plaza Suite 100 on June 7. To assist with the move, the office will be closed beginning June 6 at 3 p.m. and should reopen by 10 a.m. on June 8 at the University Plaza. External and Course Fees: Oregon State University will take written comments on its proposed updates to OSU Standard 576-010 University Fees through the end of business on June 23, 2016. Oregon State Ecampus launches podcast on research literacy in higher education: Oregon State University Ecampus has launched a weekly podcast, “Research in Action,” to address topics and issues facing researchers across the nation. “Research in Action” features interviews with experts across a range of disciplines who share their expertise on qualitative, quantitative and mixed research methods. Guests also discuss their personal experiences as researchers; research and writing practices; organizational and productivity strategies; and more. Learn more and listen to the podcast.

Traffic and Maintenance

NEW! Hwy 20 Eddyville project update: The road will be open with minimal delays between now and July 15. Expect some delays of up to 20 minutes as the project moves forward. These are unscheduled delays that occur for various construction activities. There will be some brief delays to let trucks on and off of the highway at the west end of the project. Short delays of five minutes or less may also occur as construction signs are installed. To do this a lane or shoulder is briefly closed. Most work is taking place away from the existing roadway.

Graf Hall: Due to prep work being be performed on the outside of Graf Hall in preparation for painting, the parking spaces on the south side of Graf Hall will not be available. The closure will be from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 4 (View Map).

Faculty Research Assistant.  The Department of Microbiology invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term position in a molecular microbiology research laboratory.  The duties of this position include testing new antibiotics in mouse models of infection, and in standard clinical laboratory assays.  Applicants must have research laboratory experience working with research animals (preferably mice), and pathogenic bacteria. The lifeguard position maintains constant surveillance of swimmers or canoers, monitors activities, provides instructions, helps prevent accidents; provides general information on waterfront operations to guests; cautions swimmers and canoers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforces waterfront rules and regulations; responds to all illness and injury incidents around the waterfront facilities immediately and appropriately. This is one of the earliest heat waves of this magnitude. Several record high temperatures will be broken.
