CH2M awards $1 million for endowed professorship to Oregon State University (Business Insider)

CH2M has made a $1 million gift for one endowed professorship in OSU’s College of Engineering. The endowment honors CH2M’s founders and their roots at OSU while investing in the future workforce promoting science, technology, engineering and math education. (see also Broadway World)

Mike Riley named Oregon State assistant coach after leaving for Nebraska three years ago (KATU)

Mike Riley, former Oregon State head coach, will return to coach Oregon State University football as an assistant coach, as announced Thursday by first-year head football coach Jonathan Smith. Riley returns to OSU for the third time. As head coach, he led the team to 93 victories and eight bowl games in stints from 1997-98 and 2003-14.

New timber research finds exciting potential in steel and concrete composites (Architecture Paper)

With mass timber projects on the rise around the United State, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and Oregon State University (OSU) have partnered to produce two new reports on how timber buildings can overcome their technical limitations by integrating steel and concrete. The new composite systems being proposed would allow timber construction to rise higher than before, with longer floor spans.

“East Comes West,” a two-part exhibition of prints from the Atelier Outotsu printmaking studio of Japan, is on view through Feb. 23, in Oregon State University’s Memorial Union Concourse Gallery, and Jan. 2-Feb. 1, in the Fairbanks Gallery, 220 SW 26th St., Corvallis.

Library Faculty Association Seminar: Speakers from the Corvallis-Benton Public Library will talk on Dec. 8, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Willamette Rooms (Valley Library). Free. We will hear about unexpected, fun library programs (Bonnie Brzozowski); about an introduction to Empathy in Design Thinking (Kristy Kemper Hodge); and about the future of the public library by the CBPL director (Ashlee Chavez).

TEXTtalks is a fun event that uses texts as a springboard to facilitate powerful talks. Faculty Funding: The Center for Teaching and Learning invites OSU faculty to submit proposals to participate in the Hybrid Faculty Learning Community in Spring 2018 and redesign an established Corvallis campus course as a hybrid course. External Fees Updated:  Oregon State University will take written comments on its proposed updates to OSU Standard 576-010 University Fees through the end of business on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017.  The purpose of the comment period is to receive public feedback regarding updates to the external fee proposals before they become effective on January 1, 2018.  The proposed fees are available electronically as a pdf upon request. Comments or requests should be directed to Susan Barba at susan.barba@oregonstate.edu.

Moore Inventor Fellowship: The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has invited OSU to submit up to 2 nominees as candidates for the Moore Inventor Fellowship.  The focus of the fellowship is on early stage invention that will “create new tools, technologies, processes, or approaches with a high potential to accelerate progress in the foundation’s three main areas of interest: scientific research, environmental conservation and patient care.” This is a great opportunity for an early-career inventor at OSU, with the fellowship providing $600,000 to the fellow and $75,000 to OSU for administrative overhead over 3 years.  In addition, GBMF requires that OSU commit $150,000 ($50,000 per year for 3 years) to support the fellow’s research.  To apply, click on this LINK (http://research.oregonstate.edu/office-research-development/program/gordon-and-betty-moore-foundation-moore-inventor-fellows). Email contact– research.development@oregonstate.edu
