OSU-Cascades honors student veterans with special week (KTVZ)

To honor student veterans at Oregon State University – Cascades, the Bend campus is hosting Veterans and Military Student Recognition Week from Nov. 6 to Nov. 11.

OSU treating horse with equine herpes virus (KTVZ)

The Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine reported Wednesday it has diagnosed a horse with a form of equine herpes virus, a naturally occurring virus that can cause serious illness in horses.

Space Grant Student Symposium: Oregon NASA Space Grant will host the 2017 Student Symposium, Thursday, Nov. 9, 9-6 p.m. in The LaSells Stewart Center. OSGC students awarded fellowships, NASA internships, and team experience awards will present their research projects. Keynote address by Torry Johnson from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Revolution Matters – A discussion on the Lessons from Comparative Revolutions. Join us for a community discussion with Barbara Muraca, Joseph Orosco, Robert Thompson, and  Tony Vogt about what we can learn from the Haitian Revolution, Mexican Revolution, Russian Revolution, and the German Sparticist Uprising of 1918 for making social change today. TRIAD meeting: Aslan Noakes, Executive Director of Empower Haiti Together, will share how this organization promotes sustainable and empowering partnerships that equip Haitians to create the change they desire.  The meeting will begin at noon on Thu, Nov. 9 in MU 211. University Budget Conversations: The next University Budget Conversations open forum is Thursday, Nov. 9, in Marketplace West-Northwest Room from 12:30 -1:30 p.m. Sherm Bloomer, Director of Budget & Fiscal Planning will be talking about Facilities & Administrative Costs (also known as Indirect Costs). Creative Writing Workshop with Danez Smith: Finding Honey in the Rock – A Workshop of Obsession, Thursday, Nov. 9 from 2-4 p.m. at the Lonnie B. Harris Black Cultural Center. In this workshop, we will talk about the obsessions that capture us for a season and obsessions that follow us for a lifetime. Designed for experienced and new writers alike, this workshop ask us to dive deeper into ourselves and find new language and new knowledge in the topics that we return to in our writing and our personal journeys. This workshop offers tools useful for overcoming writer’s block, for building or refining a manuscript or project, and for finding new directions and questions in your work. United States Marine Corps 242nd Birthday: The OSU Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit will host a Birthday Celebration at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9 in the Naval ROTC Armory.  All active duty, retired, former, future Marines and supporters of the Marine Corps are welcome.

Religious Liberty as Discrimination? Flash Panel – In early October, the Trump administration issued guidelines for protecting religious freedom as a fundamental right enshrined in the First Amendment. However, critics have been concerned that appeals to religious freedom can support bigotry and discrimination, as illustrated by current Supreme Court cases. Four panelists will bring areas of expertise in gender, history, culture, and ethics to bear on the question of the scope of religious freedom and its potentially discriminatory applications.  Memorial for Emery Castle: Emery N. Castle, economist, emeritus OSU professor, past president, Resources for the Future, Washington, D.C.; former head, OSU Agricultural and Resource Applied Economics, OSU dean of faculty and the Graduate School passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31.  A memorial service for Emery will be held Saturday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Corvallis.  A Celebration of Life will follow the memorial service, 4-6:30 p.m. in The LaSells Stewart Center, Giustina Gallery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice or the OSU Foundation for the Emery Castle Chair in Resource and Rural Economics or the Emery Castle Scholarship for graduate students.

Diana worked for OUS for nine years and worked for USSE since its 2014 inception as the Director of Financial Reporting, overseeing the formation of the annual financial report for five Oregon universities.

Journey into Leadership: The Center for Learning and Organizational Development is accepting applications through Nov. 14 to participate in the “Journey into Leadership” program. NEW! OSU Ecampus Online Learning Efficacy Research Database: OSU Ecampus has developed a new research database that allows users to explore whether the learning outcomes of online and/or hybrid (online and in-person) education are equivalent to face-to-face environments. This database was created in response to skepticism among faculty regarding whether online learning is as effective as face-to-face learning. Faculty can analyze studies that compare the separate modalities and make their own assessments of the outcomes of the studies.

Campus Recycling Customer Satisfaction Survey: Campus Recycling invites OSU employees who have interacted with us (recycling pick-ups, event services, department compost, etc.) to take our survey to help us evaluate the quality of service we provide and develop and refine our processes.
