Erosion hitting Oregon coast hard (Sustainable Business Oregon)

“In a general sense, Oregon has faced much more erosion in the short term than has southwest Washington, which has seen more accretion as a result of sediments from the Columbia River and jetties at the mouth of the Columbia and at Gray’s Harbor,” said Peter Ruggiero, an associate professor in OSU’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. Oregon tech ecosystem bounding back (Oregonian)

The new report is a joint effort of the Technology Association of Oregon, the Oregon Business Council and Oregon State University, with financial support from Business Oregon, the state’s economic development agency. Its findings, and a survey earlier this fall sponsored by TAO, found that a shortage of skilled workers tops Oregon tech companies’ concerns.

OSU board meeting postponed (Gazette-Times)

The 14-member OSU Board of Trustees was slated to meet for orientation sessions on campus today and Wednesday, but with snow remaining on Corvallis-area roads and the possibility of more in the forecast, university officials decided on Monday to cancel.

Oregon State University, Mesalands Wind Center to study bird, bat impacts (North American Wind Power)

New Mexico-based Mesalands Community College has announced that graduate students and professors from Oregon State University will be utilizing Mesalands’ wind turbine, located adjacent to the North American Wind Research and Training Center, to evaluate wind farms’ potential impact on bird and bat fatalities.

Oregon State unlocks master regulator gene in fungus (Biofuels Digest)

In Oregon, researchers at Oregon State University have discovered a master regulator gene in a common fungus, which expands access to new compounds that could have use in industrial biofuels. Scientists succeeded in flipping a genetic switc, activating more then 2000 genes in the fungus.

Distinct humpback whale populations found in Pacific (Discovery News)

Humpback whales are found in all oceans of the world, but the North Pacific humpbacks are genetically isolated enough to be considered a subspecies of other humpbacks, of which the new populations are further subclassifications, study co-author Scott Baker, a professor of fisheries and wildlife at Oregon State University, said in a statement.

Late start: The Corvallis campus of Oregon State University will have a delayed opening today, with campus opening at 9 a.m. 

Faculty forum on OSU Divestment out of fossil fuel companies: This one hour (brown bag) noon-time forum will examine the upcoming proposed resolution to the faculty related to the OSU Foundation divestment out of fossil fuel investments. The final faculty forum will take place at noon  Dec. 10 in Furman 300. The  resolution that will be the subject of discussion and vote by the Faculty Senate on Dec. 12.

NEW! Scheuermann retirement: Tom Scheuermann is retiring as Director of University Housing & Dining Services after 20 years as leader of the department and 23 years of service to Oregon State. Scheuermann plans to continue to be part of the OSU community through teaching in the College Student Services Administration (CSSA) graduate program. UHDS invites friends and colleagues to join in honoring and thanking Tom at a reception from 10 a.m. to noon, Friday, Dec. 13, in the Memorial Union Lounge.

Poinsettia plant sale: Now through Dec. 13, the OSU horticulture club is offering poinsettias for sale in the East greenhouses from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. Plants are $15 each or three for $40.

Afternoon Public Sale at the OSUsed Store: The OSUsed Store is open for its public sale Wednesday, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 644 SW 13th Street. Personal purchases must be made during public sales. Oregon Sea Grant Director Open Forums :

CANCELLED: Board of Trustees meetings: The Oregon State University Board of Trustees meeting has been postponed due to inclement weather and will now take place Jan. 9-10.

All about fruit trees: The OSU Extension Service and the Lane Small Business Development Center are partnering to offer a class in Eugene titled All about Fruit Trees.  This class will taught be Ross Penhallegon with Lane County OSU Extension Service and will be offered on Dec. 11, 6 p.m. on the Lane Community College main campus in Eugene.  The cost is $25 and pre-registration is required at http://smallfarms.oregonstate.edu/south-valley/events or call OSU Extension Service at (541) 766-3556.

Diversity workshop: ”Welcoming Diversity: Valuing the Differences Among Us” registration is open. Dec. 13, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., MU 206. Library Faculty Association Seminar Series: Amanda Whitmire, Data Management Specialist at OSULP, will present “Research Data Services at OSU Libraries and Press: What’s the Story?” on Dec. 13, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Dec. 13 in the Willamette Rooms (Third Floor) Valley Library.  This seminar is intended to be a “Who, what, when, where, why and how?” about research data services for audiences including faculty and staff within OSULP and the wider campus community.
