2008

November 20, 2008 - Dr. Bruce Mate presentation - "The Biggest and the Deepest:  Tracking the Whales",  LaSells Stewart Center Agricultural Science Room, 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
A presentation by Dr. Bruce Mate, Director of the Marine Mammal Institute.  brucemate003He has held an endowed chair since 1994 and is a Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, and Adjunct Professor in the College of Oceanography and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University.  Dr. Mate was the Director of the OSU Marine Mammal Program since its inception in 1973, and the Marine Mammal Institute since it was formed in 2006.

Dr. Mate’s research focuses on identifying the migration, feeding and breeding habitats of endangered whales.  He is world-renowned for pioneering the development of satellite-monitored radio tags to track large whales, and for using resulting data to reduce human impacts that inhibit the recovery of depleted whale populations.  Dr. Mate’s team has tracked 13 populations of seven endangered whale species in all the oceans of the world.  Beginning last year, the tags developed in Dr. Mate’s lab have incorporated GPS technology and time/depth recording capabilities to critically evaluate natural movements, trophic (the position of an organism in the food chain) interactions and behaviors, as well as those possibly in response to human activities.  These tags will enable more specific details of behavior and precise tracking of whales across the globe.

This session is an update on efforts to help you in protecting yourself and family from identity theft. Explore, in layman's terms, the anatomy of online profiling and identify theft. Dr. Jensen will answer questions such as: What information is collected and what it can reveal about you? How is it gathered? What do you need to know and do to protect yourself? Is the problem so endemic that you should sign up for identify theft protection insurance? Or is that necessary? This interactive session is back by popular demand from two years ago.

All My Sons by Arthur Miller

This classic American drama from one the world's leading playwrights takes place over a twenty-four hour period in the days just following World War II.
Set in the Midwest , the story painfully depicts the struggle of a tight-knit family's attempt to cope with the loss of their son while fighting in the conflict overseas as well as the father's possible culpability in some surreptitious war profiteering that ended with disastrous results.
Sixty years after its original production on Broadway, All My Sons still hits the bullseye in its unflinching depiction of honor, responsibility and ethics during a time of war.
