The 2004 list of rare nonvascular plants and fungi includes updates resulting from review and ranking of the Northwest Forest Plan's "Survey and Manage" taxa, completed by various taxonomic experts between 2001 and 2004. A number of taxa were upgraded from List 3 to Lists 1 and 2, while others were added to or dropped from the list. The Northwest Forest Plan is directly responsible for the great increase in field inventory and expertise for all nonvascular taxa, and new state records are being found every year by a growing number of sharp-eyed and well-informed observers.
