greenhouse gases
the gases present in the earth's atmosphere that reduce heat loss into space and thereby contribute to global temperature increases through the greenhouse effect. Since the industrial revolution, human activity has sharply increased the concentration of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, and nitrous oxide. Methane has a global warming potential (GWP) 25 times greater than that of CO2, and nitrous oxide a GWP 298 times greater.
