Meet your 2015 START Leaders

START Leaders are current OSU students who will be greeting you when you arrive at your START session. They will be helping you get acquainted with campus resources, explaining important OSU policies and academic expectations, and assisting you throughout your time at START.

Our START Leaders are extemely excited to get the summer started, but in the meantime, learn a little more about them below.

What advice do you have for being successful your first term at OSU? Use your syllabi. Every assignment and due dates should be listed in the syllabus, so you can use it as a reference or to fill in your planner for the term.

Why did you choose your major? I chose my major because I have always wanted to work with people and I am passionate about being a good leader.

What advice do you have for new OSU students? Take advantage of office hours. People rarely use them and the professors get to know you and will do their best to ensure that you are successful in their classes.

What is your favorite event/activity at OSU? Football games are the perfect time to relieve the stresses of classes or to just have fun with friends and family, as well as all the other fellow Beaver fans that flood Corvallis.

What is your favorite event/activity at OSU?  I really enjoy DAM JAM, which is the concert held in the MU quad every spring term. It is so much fun to have a free concert right in the heart of campus.

What do you remember most about your START Experience? I met some people at START that I recognized when classes started, so that made me feel more comfortable as a new student.

What is the most significant experience you have had at OSU? My most significant experience has been working alongside professors at OSU to perform research in a field of interest.

What have you learned most through your college experience?  I've learned to never be afraid of who you are. More than anything, college is a place where you are wholly accepted as yourself, and I've never felt more at home than at Oregon State University.

What is your favorite event/activity at OSU? My favorite OSU events are After Dark events. They're usually themed on activities such as carnivals, casino night, pirates, or even western. They also serve food, drinks, popcorn, and snow cones which is great.

What advice do you have for being successful your first term at OSU?  It can be hard to say no when there is always something fun going on. Just remember, that's how it is going to be every week, so take the time to focus on your classes.

What is the most significant experience you have had at OSU? My most significant experience at OSU was going to Texas with the Black Student Union and being able to meet people from different schools that all want to be successful in life.

What advice do you have for new OSU students?  Don't be afraid to try new things, go to events that are outside your realm, and always be nice and smile.

What advice do you have for being successful your first term at OSU? Don't sweat the small stuff. Not every test will go the way you want it to and not every class will be your forte. If you get a bad grade on your first exam, don't be discouraged.

What is the most significant experience you have had at OSU? My most significant experience was when I went to India Night. I encourage everyone to go to one cultural event because they are so much fun, you get to eat amazing food, and you may diversify your friend group.

What is your favorite event/activity at OSU?  My favorite activity at OSU is going to the difference dances, such as the Country Western dances.

What do you remember most about your START Experience? What I remember most about my START experience is meeting some of my current good friends while hanging out in the residence hall during the overnight stay.

What is the most significant experience you have had at OSU? Mom's Weekend was my most significant OSU experience because my mom used to live in Corvallis and it was the first time she came to visit me and could show me around.

What is the most significant experience you have had at OSU? The most significant experience I had in my first year was being the only freshman to join Microbiology Club on a medical conference in Seattle.

Why did you choose your major? I chose my major because it's what drives me and makes me happy. I have to push myself, and when I succeed, it's the best feeling in the world.

What advice do you have for being successful your first term at OSU? Experience it all. Find activities and events that are outside your comfort zone and really explore your interests to the fullest.

What advice do you have for being successful your first term at OSU? My advise to new students is that you can be anyone you want, so do something you have never done before.

Why did you choose your major? I chose my major because it fit me best and I love what I learn. I have a passion for helping people, mostly families.

What advice do you have for being successful your first term at OSU?  Three words: Budget your time. The skill of organization becomes increasingly imperative as you transverse your first couple of terms, and will allow you to be social and get solid grades at the same time.

Why did you choose your major? Psychology has always been an interesting topic for me, specifically how development plays a role in the person you become today. I want to explore that subject more by working with children.

What is the most significant experience you have had at OSU? Joining Greek Life is the most significant experience I've had. It's helped me become who I am. It broke me out of an introverted state of mind, helped me meet people and become part of a community.
