Math Placement Test Instructions

First-year Students

The Math Placement Test is required for all first-year students (regardless of previous AP/IB or college level credit). You must take the test at least 72 hours prior to your scheduled START session. This test is helpful for advisors to place you in the correct level of math during your advising session. We recommend that students with prior college level math credit bring their transcripts and scores to their START session.

Transfer Student Math Placement Test Instructions

Please read the following information carefully before taking the Math Placement Test. A link to the online test and the practice test follows the instructions.

Transfer students who have not successfully completed college level math will be required to take the Math Placement Test before meeting with an advisor at START. College level math is defined as Math 111 (or equivalent) and above. If your college level math was taken more than 2 years ago, please contact your college directly to determine if you will need to take the Math Placement Test.

General instructions

The Math Placement Test is designed to assist academic advisors in placing you in the appropriate level of math given your current skill level. Therefore an accurate score on the Math Placement Test is vital in order to provide you with a correct placement.

In order to receive an accurate score on the test we recommend the following:

  • Do not use a textbook or other reference material
  • Do not use a calculator
  • Limit yourself to one hour or less
  • If you don't know the answer, skip it rather than taking a wild guess

If you feel you did not do well on the test and should be placed at a higher level, you will have the opportunity to speak about your placement with an academic advisor at your START session.
