Network Engineering

NNTP News Service (discontinued)

Network Engineering used to provide access to a full Usenet newsfeed. However, use of (and benefit from) this service has gradually declined over time. In response, Network Engineering decided to reevaluate the cost/benefit of offering this service in the fall of 2006. This review found the following:

• The news server consumed a significant amount of bandwidth.
• The server hardware was aging and in need of replacement.
• Issues were difficult to diagnose and troubleshoot due to the nature of the software.
• We only identified approximately 30 unique connections over several months.
• There are many alternatives available, such as mailing lists, online forums and Google newsgroups.

In light of this, Network Engineering decided to discontinue offering this service as of 2/2/2007. For people who strongly prefer to continue reading news in this traditional manner, there are some free news servers available. The following website lists several:
