Installing Exchange 2000/2003 Administration Tools
Last Updated: 6/09/2006
Unlike Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000/2003 does not have its own directory. Instead, it uses Active
Directory. In AD, the mailbox is an attribute of the user account, rather than a separate object.
To administer Exchange 2000/2003 mailboxes, you need to install the Active Directory Users & Computers
snap-in and Exchange System Manager. Exchange System Manager (ESM) allows you to administer
Exchange attributes within Active Directory Users & Computers that would not otherwise be available.
NOTE: Your machine must be joined to the domain where you will be administering accounts, or to a trusted domain.
You will also need to have administrative permissions in the domain or OU where you will be administering accounts,
as well as permissions to create objects in Exchange. For more information, send email to
IT Consult.
