Data Services, including FlexNet.

Data Services

from Network Services, a division of

Information Services

Network Services offers world class data networking for Oregon State Univeristy by Networking Engineering and Telecommunications working together to provide data services. Collectively, we provide the core network connections for all of OSU's campus, connections to the Internet and Internet2, and a subscription based in-building network called FlexNet.

FlexNet

Network Services can take the hassle out of providing network connections to your department. Network Services will purchase, install and maintain all FlexNet switches, hubs and related equipment needed to provide reliable network access for your department. This includes installation and maintenance of all equipment and wiring up to the wall jack. In this way your department is freed from the responsibilities associated with the ownership, maintenance and upgrading of network equipment. New connections may be added in increments as small as one port at a time.

The advantages of FlexNet include a reduction in restrictions and bottlenecks caused by physical locations and subnet boundaries, more flexibility in moves, adds and changes, and more effective backbone bandwidth availability. "Virtual LAN" capability will allow your work groups to be spread out over different locations with minimal loss of speed or performance.

Connections to the Core OSU Network

Network Services also provides connections to the core OSU network for departments that maintain their own local area networking. These connections enable departmental networks to be interconnected and to connect to the Internet and Internet2.

FlexNet Standard Desktop Serivce

*$5.00 a month per port.

Network services offers standard FlexNet connections at with current speeds for standard Ethernet technology. That means we currently are using switched 10/100Mb connections for new installs and are working on a upgrade schedule to get existing installations to that standard.

100 Mb Ethernet Connection to OSU Core Network

*$110.00 a month per connection.

Network services offers 100Mb Ethernet connections to nearly all buildings on campus and this is our current standard building connection.

Gigabit Ethernet Connection to OSU Core Network

*$175.00 a month per connection.

Gigbit Ethernet connections are the next generation connection and are only avilavailable in buildings with single mode fiber optics installed. Availability is limited, and this service is intended for those departments with very high bandwidth needs.

T1 Connection to OSU Core Network

T1 connections are intended for off campus OSU sites that need to be connected to the OSU network. The cost is subject to prices from Qwest communications, call for pricing.

Installation Fees

All installations are done at a time and materials basis. You can open a job estimate by contacting Telecommunications Customer support. FlexNet customers are only responsible for the installation of wire from the networking closet to the end location of the data drop, the infrastructure required to the closet is covered in the month fee.

APPENDIX:

Network Management

All FlexNet switches and hubs are monitored. If a switch or hub loses network connectivity, on-call service personnel are automatically paged. Monitoring coverage at present is Monday through Sunday, 6:00AM - 10:00PM.

Security

All FlexNet switch ports and 10Mb hub ports provide eavesdrop protection. On 10 Mb hubs, alarm and lockout options are available if workstation hardware addresses change. These options are not enabled unless requested. Eavesdrop protection allows relatively secure access to FIS and SIS eliminating the need for the old Sytek service.

Maintenance

Network Services (NWS) will maintain all FlexNet equipment up to the data jacks where the customer equipment connects to the network. Network Services will work with Departmental Computing Administrators (DCAs) in identifying and resolving any problems. Maintenance and support is limited to FlexNet equipment and wiring, and does not include application or end user support. (Other teams within IS can provide these if needed).

Bandwidth

NWS will interconnect FlexNet switches at 10Mb initially. If traffic volume and patterns warrant, the interconnects will be upgraded to 100Mb. This determination will be made based on information provided by Departmental Computer Administrators and/or monitored activity levels.

Virtual Subnetting

Any FlexNet switch port can be a part of any subnet within the FlexNet system. This allows participating users to share a logical subnet with other members of their organization regardless of physical location on campus. (Note: All shared ports on the same physical hub must be on the same logical subnet.)
