Electronic Harassment

HARASSMENT OF ANY KIND IS NOT CONDONED BY OSU AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

Each term Central Computing and OSU administration receive numerous complaints from persons who encounter material which they find offensive in their electronic mail, on public bulletin boards, in personal "finger" messages, and on displays and printers in public areas. The most common materials which are subjects of complaints are sexually suggestive mail; explicit sexual graphic materials; and racist, sexist or homphobic statements and verbal obscenity in mail and postings.

The university has an Acceptable Use Policy which states, among other things, that state funded computing resources are to be used only for legitimate university purposes. When we receive complaints, we are required to investigate to determine if a violation of this policy has occurred. In particular, upon receipt of a complaint, we must collect and forward to the appropriate disciplinary body any and all evidence indicating that state-funded computing and/or network resources are being used inappropriately.

Accounts will be disabled while we contact the individual responsible and settle the complaint. This can result in university discipline for offenses which may range from inappropriate use of university resources to harassment.

We recommend that you give careful thought to the content of mail you send and material you post. Doing so will help to make the electronic environment at OSU a professional, considerate, mature, and congenial place.

Thank you for your help.
