There is a tremendous difference in the effects of an earthquake in a developed country and in the developing world. Chile has some of the world’s most stringent building codes, so there were far fewer deaths in the Chilean quake compared to the ones in Pakistan and Haiti. There are cities around the world where similar earthquakes could kill a million people, and they will unless we better prepare for them. Major earthquakes are inevitable. The loss of hundreds of thousands of lives is not.
