Research Topic:
Internal waves on the inner shelf

Working with Dr. Jack Barth and other faculty of the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, Ata Suanda studies internal waves as they travel across the Oregon continental shelf. These waves, which propagate on the interior of the ocean, can have a variety of environmental consequences. They potentially transport larvae, nutrients and/or pollutants, and play a role in the mixing of nearshore waters with the rest of the shelf. Suanda uses a combination of instruments moored in the ocean, remote sensing, and mathematical models to study the frequency of internal wave events and how these waves interact with background oceanographic conditions.
