INTO OSU

INTO Oregon State University (INTO OSU) is a collaboration between OSU and INTO University Partnerships and is an initiative to increase the number of international students at OSU. Implementation has been underway for several months, and we will use this web site to provide occasional updates to the campus community as implementation continues.

Your questions or comments are always welcome, and may be directed to my office by emailing Gigi.Bruce@oregonstate.edu. You may also send questions and comments directly to the INTO OSU Center by emailing Steve Walters, Steve.Walters@oregonstate.edu, Center Director, or to Chris Bell, Chris.A.Bell@oregonstate.edu, Academic Program Director for INTO OSU.

I also encourage you to visit the INTO OSU web site at http://www.into.us.com/oregonstate.html.

Provost and Executive Vice President

About INTO and INTO OSU

INTO University Partnerships already has established five centers in the UK: Manchester, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of East Anglia (in Norwich), University of Exeter and Newcastle University. INTO OSU is the first US venture for INTO, and is a significant addition to the options available for international students wishing to study abroad. You may learn more about the INTO centers in the UK by visiting http://www.into.uk.com/.

INTO University Partnerships will recruit international students to enroll at OSU in a variety of programs:

One-year "pathway" programs.

Academic English programs.

General English programs.

Special short term programs, e.g. tailored for groups of teachers.

Conditional Admissions Program (CAP).

Direct entry into any undergraduate or graduate program.

A Pathway program is a one-year undergraduate or graduate program designed to ease an international student’s transition to a new country, improve English skills and introduce courses required for their intended major. Undergraduate pathways will begin in September 2009 in Business, Engineering, Science and General options. Students completing the pathway with specified grades will have the option of enrolling directly at OSU. Graduate pathway programs will begin in 2010 in Business and Engineering. Students completing the pathway with specified grades will be eligible to apply for regular admission at OSU.

The overall objectives of the INTO OSU joint venture are as follows:

INTO OSU will be host to a multi-cultural, balanced mix of diverse student nationalities.

OSU’s reputation as a premium provider of high quality pathway programs will be developed.

A significant number of new jobs will be created in addition to new career opportunities for some OSU staff and faculty.

An increase in direct international enrollments to OSU undergraduate and graduate degree programs as a direct result of exposure to the OSU brand and interaction with the INTO Sales & Marketing team.

OSU’s membership in a global alliance of 25 INTO university partners across the UK, Europe, Australia, Asia and USA, providing synergistic opportunities for collaboration with like-minded partners.

Significant Dates in the implementation:

June 2009: First INTO students for English language programs;

September 2009: First students for Pathway programs;

September 2009: Heckart Lodge will reopen as classroom and office space for INTO OSU programs;

September 2010: Reed Lodge will reopen as additional classroom and office space;

September 2011: A new dormitory (in the Arnold complex) will be opened.

The Recruitment Process:

Students are recruited via agents that are selected, recruited and managed by INTO Regional Managers (that are INTO employees). The agents are independent educational advisors. More than 1,000 agents currently work with INTO.

Teaching, Office and Residential Facilities:

Heckart and Reed Lodge will become the permanent INTO OSU teaching and office spaces. West, Halsell and Bloss Halls will be used until a new residence hall is built. In the longer term a permanent additional residence is to be constructed on campus, in the Arnold complex.

Staffing:

All former English Language Institute (ELI) staff remain OSU employees.

All INTO OSU academic staff, including any new academic staff hired going forward, will be employed directly by OSU, under OSU employment terms.

The INTO OSU Academic Programs Director (APD) (and therefore all INTO OSU academic staff) are OSU employees reporting to the OSU Provost’s Office who will work on a day to day basis with the INTO OSU Center Director. The APD will be appointed and evaluated by OSU, in consultation with the INTO OSU Center Director.

All other staff not directly related to the delivery of academic programs, including the Center Director, will be employed by INTO OSU (the JV) under employment terms matching (as best as possible) those of the OSU employed staff.
