Terryl Ross

Director for Community and Diversity

Terryl Ross, a longtime Seattle-area educator and consultant and a Northwest leader in diversity education, became Oregon State University's first director for Community and Diversity in August 2004. Before coming to OSU, Ross helped created diversity plans for the University of Washington and Green River Community College.

He was the founder of MOSAIC, the Multicultural Organization of Students Actively Involved in Change at the University of Washington. As leader of MOSAIC for the past 10 years, Ross developed and led an annual diversity summit in Seattle, conducted a diversity audit for the UW, and brought together several different groups to advance diversity goals. For his work there, he was honored with special awards from the UW president and the university's alumni association.

From 2002 to 2004 he also served as multicultural services coordinator at Green River Community College. Ross has a Ph.D. in educational communication and technology from the University of Washington and a master's in public relations from Syracuse University. He earned his bachelor's degree in government from Eastern Washington University.

Community and Diversity

When longtime director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Phyllis Lee retired in 2003, the university restructured the position to create a cabinet-level director to lead its community and diversity efforts and to report directly to the president.

The Office of Community and Diversity assists the university in promoting cultural diversity, awareness, and sensitivity throughout the campus community. It provides leadership in promoting an environment responsive to the diversity of groups at OSU. Support is provided to students, faculty, staff, and administration in the following areas:

  • Recruitment and retention of students, faculty, staff and administrators of color and other underrepresented groups.
  • Curriculum development and transformation.
  • Student, faculty and staff development.
  • Cross cultural issues and concerns of individuals and groups.
  • Liaison with ethnic/racial and other underrepresented groups, public and private agencies, and related groups and organizations.
