Virtual Computer Lab

The Student Computing Facilities offers a Virtual Computing Lab for Students and Instructors. This allows students to run our software on their own computers, from on or off campus. We hope to expand the applications available through this service in the future.

How to Connect:

The virtual computer lab can be accessed on and off campus with client software called Remote Desktop Client (RDC). We recommend that you use the newest version of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) regardless of which operating system you are using. The newest RDP client provides several important services.

Windows Macintosh (OS X) Linux

Connecting to Umbrella:

  1. Launch the Remote Desktop Software. If there is no shortcut on your desktop, look in the Start menu under Accessories.
  2. Enter the server name: umbrella.scf.oregonstate.edu
  3. Choose the domain ONID (Vista users do not have to do this)
  4. Enter your ONID username and password (Vista users should use their email address bob@onid.oregonstate.edu instead of their username)
  5. After logging in, your ONID Home directory, Class Applications, and Class Folders can be accessed by clicking on My Computer
  6. You may redirect your local drive to appear on umbrella and access your local printer by clicking on "Options" and "Local Resources" at the log in screen

How to get your class software install this on Virtual Computer Lab:

Fill out the form at the following url, be sure to choose the "Virtual Computer Lab" as one of your install locations:

Not all software will work in a terminal server environment, after your software is tested and seems to work, it will then be installed. This can take several weeks depending on how busy we are.
