SCF provides many services to the students, staff and faculty at Oregon State University. The following are some of the services we provide.

The Student Computing Facilities offers disk space for instructors who wish to distribute electronic data to their students. The ClassroomSAN also offers disk space for student projects in classes in our computer classroom. This service is only available for Macintosh users. If you are a Windows class, see our Class Folders for Windows service. Many instructors may find OSU's Blackboard system to be sufficient for their class disk space needs.

How to Connect:

Background: The server name is ClassroomSAN (aka nemo) which is not browsable on the AppleTalk network. Its DNS name is classroomsan.scf.oregonstate.edu

To connect in Kidder 028, Kidder 022 and Stations 903 and 904 in the Milne Basement:

The computers in Kidder 028, 022 and stations 903 and 904 in the Milne Basement have a high speed fibre connection to the ClassroomSAN. When using the ClassroomSAN in these classrooms users will exprerence connection speeds many times faster than over the OSU network. The SAN appears as a drive on the desktop on the computers in these rooms.

To connect to the ClassroomSAN from on or off campus:

  1. Go to the Go menu
  2. Type classroomsan.scf.oregonstate.edu and click Connect
  3. Type your ONID username and password and click ok
  4. Select the ClassroomSAN volume

 

How to get a class folder on this server:

Send an email to scfadmin@lists.oregonstate.edu with the following information:

  • Class Name (CS123)
  • Full Names of those who will be putting files in the folder (ie instructors, TAs, etc)
  • A class list of students you wish to have a work folder for your class.
  • Do you want a dropbox for your students to submit work?
  • Estimated removal date for the folder

Class Folders (Poole) for Windows

The Student Computing Facilities offers disk space for instructors who wish to distribute electronic data to their students. This service is only available to classes which are taught in our computer classrooms. This service is only available for Windows users, if you are a Macinotsh class, see our Class folders for Mac service. We suggest that instructors use OSU's Blackboard system for their class disk space needs.

How to Connect:

Background: The server name is Poole located in the ONID domain. Its DNS name is poole.scf.oregonstate.edu

To connect to Poole from on campus:

  1. Go to the Start Menu and select Run
  2. Type \\poole.scf.oregonstate.edu and click OK
  3. Type your ONID username and password, with "onid\" in front of your username.
  4. Double-click on Class Folders

To connect to Poole from off campus:

You can not connect to Poole directly from off campus. Users are suggested to use the campus VPN to access this file server.

How to get a class folder on this server:

Send an email to scfadmin@lists.oregonstate.edu with the following information:

  • Class Name (CS123)
  • Full Names of those who will be putting files in the folder (ie instructors, TAs, etc)
  • Estimated removal date for the folder

Classroom Usage Policy

The purpose of the following policy is to establish a basis for people who need to schedule and/or use these facilities: Kidder 028, Kidder 033, Milne 201, Education 126, Weniger 222, and Milne 130. Exceptions to this policy should be addressed to the Facility Coordinator.

  • Credit courses in OSU's Schedule of Classes have first priority, and should fall within the times approved by the University Schedule Policy.
  • Scheduling a class for a term does not guarantee a reservation during Finals Week. Finals should be scheduled separately. Classes that regularly meet in these facilities during the term will receive priority for scheduling during Finals Week.
  • Courses scheduled one term do not automatically carry over to the next term or year. Classes must be rescheduled each term.
  • Student groups recognized by ASOSU may reserve the computer classrooms for group functions. The equipment usage fee will be waived for such groups. A technician fee may be assessed depending on the group's requirements.
  • Other OSU associated departments and/or programs can be scheduled on a first come, first serve basis after the schedule of classes has gone to press.
  • All other groups should make arrangements through the Facility Coordinator, and may be charged a fee for equipment usage.

    Less than 25 Stations: $35/hour
    25 or More Stations: $45/hour

    The following Discounts apply:
    OSU department or organization: 50%
    Other state agency: 25%

    Other Charges:
    Software Installation: $40/hour
    Student Technician : $15/hour

  • Classes not in session within 10 minutes of scheduled time will be forfeited to general access.
  • Classes will be scheduled within operational hours of the Student Computing Facilities. Classes outside of this specification will need to be approved by the facility coordinator, additionally these classes may be assessed fees detailed above for usage, as well as consultant support.
  • Additional software needs can be met by following the requirements put forth in the Software Installation Policy.

Computing Staff Policy

In order to provide better service to our customers we require all active student employees to read the Student Computing Facility Staff Policy. By working in our computing facilities you agree to be bound by its stipulations and regulations. All Staff Members, as a condition of their employment, also agree to be bound by all other facility policies.

1) Rules and Responsibilities

Our main priority is to provide the best service possible to our users. To that end, Staff Members should endeavor to be pro-active in their dealings with users and stay informed on facility developments.

  • Treat customers and co-workers with tolerance, understanding and respect.
  • Consultants are not allowed to do homework or other personal work while on duty at the Main computer facility during the hours of 8am to 8pm Monday though Friday.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and mandatory training.
  • Read all SCFstaff relatede-mail on a daily basis (preferably before or at the beginning of your shift after the normal tasks are done).
  • Appear clean and well groomed, wear the appropriate nametag in a visible place, and behave in a professional manner while on duty.
  • Walk around the facility and help users.
  • Complete the tasks specified on the task list for each hour.
  • Remain in the facility until their shift ends or, if closing a facility, when the closing procedure is completed.
  • Use the time clock on the web to track the hours you worked.
  • Correctly print out, sign and turn in their time sheets by the 16th at 8am of every month.
  • Do not allow users behind the Staff Member desk or in "Staff Only" areas.
  • Do not "chat" (including interpersonally or over the Internet) with friends while on duty.
  • Do not install any software on the front desk computers.
  • Use of the Staff computers in satellite labs are limited to; troubleshooting problems, checking email, or viewing the web. Other uses are prohibited.
  • Do not play games while on-duty.
  • Do not view movies while on-duty, except during graveyard shifts.
  • No use of headphones while on-duty.
  • Do not use computers other than the front desk machines while on duty.
  • Do not use the phone for personal use more than two minutes.
  • Incidents that occur in the facility should be reported to an SCF admin in a timely matter.

When traffic is slow, Staff members may read their e-mail or use the Internet, with the following stipulations:

  • Customer needs are SCF's priority. If they ask for assistance, help them out.
  • Staff Members are to remain at the Staff area when not assisting users or completing SCF related tasks.
  • Staf should ask coworkers for consent to do any of these activities.
  • If things get busier, and tasks come up that need to be done,the Staff Member is required to return to his/her duties immediately.
  • Make sure tasks assigned for the current hour have been completed.

2) Resolving Conflicts

When a Staff Member has a problem with the conduct of another Staff Member, resolve the situation in the following manner:

Conflicts between co-workers:

  • Address the issue, always in a professional manner and out of the earshot of users.
  • If the issue is still not resolved, talk to or send mail to SCFadmin.
  • Interpersonal communication should only be sent to the involved parties directly, the SCF mailing lists is not to be used to resolve a dispute.

Conflicts between user and Staff:

  • If the user is abusive (either verbally or physically) to Staff Members, other users or equipment, call Campus Security 7-3010 immediately.

3) Taking a Shift

  • Staff Members are expected to show up for work on time.
  • Staff Members must work all hours for which they are scheduled.
  • If no one has taken the shift you're still responsible for that shift. See Time Clock Procedure and Policy for procedures in dealing with shifts that have not been taken.
  • Once a Staff Member is confirmed for a shift by an e-mail message, they will be held responsible for those hours.

4) Disciplinary Action

  • Staff Members can be subjected to an employment review at any time if deemed appropriate by the student supervisor and the facility coordinator.
  • Failure to abide by the facility policies may result in a verbal or written warning, or if the offense is severe enough, an employment review.
  • Three written warnings in a six month period will result in a mandatory employment review.
  • Possible outcomes of an employment review include, but are not limited to:
    • Probation
    • Suspension
    • Termination of employment

5) Rewards

Perfect Attendance Reward

      If a Staff Member has NOT had any late to shifts or missed shifts (excused or non-excused) that have been reported for the current term. The Staff Member will be allowed to schedule one day earlier than their normal priority date for the next term.

Graveyard Reward

    If a staff member works 64 graveyard hours (00:30 - 8:30) during the current term, the staff member will be allowed to schedule one day earlier than their normal priority date for the next term.

6) Security

  • Personal information, phone numbers and work hours of other Staff Members should be guarded and not given out to the general public.
  • The Staff password should be given only to other Staff Members through direct verbal communication in a face to face manner.

Facility Policy

The Student Computing Facilities are operated with as much flexibility as possible to provide the maximum benefit to the greatest number of users. To assist us in achieving this goal, we require that users of our facilities follow the policy outlined in this document.

Note: Please read this policy statement thoroughly. By using this facility, the user agrees to abide by all rules and regulations set forth in this document and Oregon State University's Acceptable Use Policy. Ignorance of the information contained within these documents is not an excuse for failing to adhere to facility policy. All users who violate Facility Policy will be dealt with in a manner consistent with the guidelines set forth in section 3 "General Rules and Conditions".

Only the Facility Manager is allowed to make exceptions to this policy.

1) Admittance

This Facility is for use by people that fit one or more of the following criteria:

  1. Currently registered OSU/ELI students
  2. OSU Staff and Faculty
  3. Students who have been admitted to OSU as part of the LBCC-OSU Dual Admission program and have purchased the student fee package. Other LBCC students are not included.
  4. A valid OSU account is required to use the facility. Visitors should make arrangements with their sponsors to obtain an account.

2) Responsibility of Facility Consultants

The primary responsibilities of the consultants are as follows:

  1. Assist, to a reasonable extent, with user's hardware and software difficulties.
  2. Provide assistance in educating users on Facility Policy and in the use of supplied hardware and software.
  3. Notify security if a user is abusing the facility, its equipment, fellow users, or facility employees.

Consultants are NOT to assist users with homework.

 

3) General Rules and Conditions

Users must adhere to the following rules and conditions. Failure to do so will result in a warning and/or loss of facility privileges for a period to be determined by the staff of this facility. Users will be held accountable for any damages they cause to the facility and/or its equipment.

3.1 Usage

  1. Users are NOT to abuse fellow users, the facility, its staff, nor its equipment.
  2. Eating, drinking, and the use of tobacco products are strictly prohibited in the computing areas.
  3. Users asked to checkout of their machines have 5 minutes to do so.
  4. Users are allotted 2 hours of computer, software, and manual use. More time is allowed as long as there is no waiting list.
  5. Computers will NOT be left unattended for more than 15 minutes. Such action will result in the user being checked out immediately.
  6. No animals, except guide dogs, will be allowed in the facility.
  7. Any person disrupting the operation of this facility will be required to leave the facility.
  8. Students have priority over faculty/staff use.
  9. Game Policy.
  10. Multimedia Policy.
  11. We are not responsible for any lost or stolen items.

3.2 File Storage

  1. The Staff of this facility bear no responsibility over user files. They will not be protected nor maintained.
  2. Users will provide their own media.
  3. Users are encouraged to use their ONID account for their file storage needs.

3.4 OSU Policy on Unauthorized Copying of Copyrighted Software

The primary responsibility for protection of licensed software rests with the purchaser, whether OSU or a faculty member, of that software. All users have a personal responsibility to control and protect the software package from misuse. Supervisors should assure that users under their direction have been informed of University policy. Users must personally ensure that no unauthorized copies of licensed software are made.

Copies are not to be made for use at home, for sale, for trade, or for gifts to others. Individuals who make unauthorized copies of licensed software, or who allow such copies to be made, will be subject to regulations pertaining to theft or misuse of University property. Absolutely no copying or duplication of copyrighted software will be permitted.

UNAUTHORIZED DISTRIBUTION OF COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS IS A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED ON THIS CAMPUS.

Game Policy

When playing games, all users must abide by the following rules and guidelines:

  1. Games have a low priority for facility use. If all machines are in use, or if another user needs to use special equipment on your machine, you will be required to give up the machine that you are currently using.
  2. Gameplayers must play with the sound off, or use the headphones.
  3. Gameplayers may not ask someone on a specially equipped machine to relocate so that they can play a game on their machine.
  4. You may not copy nor distribute any type of software that is not public domain.
  5. Gameplayers must not disturb other users in the computer facility.

Multimedia Policy

The following are guidelines for the use of the multimedia machines at Student Computing Facility.

  • The multimedia computers at Student Computing Facility are reserved for multimedia purposes only. Anything that can be done on the other computers in the facility should be done on other computers.
  • If a user is using a multimedia machine for non-multimedia purposes and another user wishes to use that machine for multimedia purposes, the current user will relinquish control of that machine.
  • Games are not allowed on the multimedia computers under any circumstances.
  • When there is a waiting list for the multimedia computers, we will enforce a two-hour time limit for those using the multimedia computers.
  • When the regular computers in the computing facility are totally occupied, the multimedia computers may be checked out to students waiting to use the regular computers. Such students may be asked to move to a regular computer if one becomes available and there is a need for the multimedia computer.

Software Installation Policy

Instructors may request that we install software in one of our computing labs or in the Virtual Computing Lab.

Process & Requirements for Instructors

  • Fill out the request form two (2) weeks prior to the time the software is needed
  • Deliver any software installation media or provide download information two (2) weeks prior to the time the software is needed
  • Provide proof of valid licences and number of licenses avalible for us to use
  • Provide all installation documentation

Software delivered with shorter lead time will result in a first-come, first-serve basis with an installation period of up to 2 weeks.

Testing Requirements & Support Information

  • Instructors will be notified when their software is installed and ready to test.
  • Software installed in a computing lab / facility should be tested at least 48 hours prior to their first class to make sure it is working according to their needs.
  • Software installed in our virtual computer lab should be tested at least one (1) week prior to their first class to make sure it is working according to their needs.
  • While consultants can assist users with general computer problems and supported software, consultants will not be specifically trained in the usage of installed class software. The only form of support available to students requesting assistance on the class software will be the software manual(s). Further questions will be re-directed to the class instructor or department, as applicable.
  • If an instructor wishes to install software that needs frequent updates, data revisions, etc, special arrangements may be made. Please contact the Facility Manager or associated staff.
