Academic Issues
The following section provides information regarding registration, credit transfer and academic performance. Keep track of these very important matters so your graduation is not delayed.
Registration
The Office of International Degree and Education Abroad will email your ONID Account the proper CRN every term you are abroad and it will be your responsibility to REGISTER YOURSELF through Online Services https://adminfo.ucsadm.oregonstate.edu/prod/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin. You will register yourself with the proper CRN provided to you from Abroad.Registration@oregonstate.edu each term you are abroad, so keep checking your ONID account. If you are on a semester or year-long program and will receive 2 or 3 terms worth of credits at OSU, you will need to register for the CRN provided to you each term you are abroad as the CRN will change from the previous term. This CRN is a place holder and does not show the actual courses you are taking abroad. If you need your PIN number, contact your ACADEMIC advisor. If you have a hold on your account, you must address that as soon as possible as the hold prevents you from registering. If you fail to register while abroad, you will receive no OSU credit for your courses. Also, please note that financial aid will NOT be disbursed until you are registered. If you register after the first day of classes at OSU (while abroad) you will be charged a late registration fee of $50
First day of classes for the 2009-2010 academic year:
Summer term begins June 22
Fall term begins September 28
Winter term begins January 4th
Spring term begins March 29th
Once your transcript has arrived at OSU and you have met with your study abroad advisor and submitted all your course syllabi, your transcript will be changed to reflect your actual courses and credit load.
Pre-Departure Academic Arrangements
Before departure, it is advisable to meet with your academic adviser to discuss how the courses you take abroad will satisfy course requirements here at OSU. It is your responsibility to make sure these credits can be used towards major/minor/bacc-core requirements.
By looking at the degree requirements for your major, you should identify the courses you still need to take for major, minor and bacc core requirements. Next, you should investigate the courses offered on your study abroad program. These are usually found on the Web site of your host university or on the study abroad program Web site. You will want to provide your academic adviser as much information as possible about the courses you want to take abroad. Often syllabi or detailed course descriptions can be found on the Web sites. Bring this information to the meeting with your academic adviser. Your adviser can help you determine what OSU requirements these courses may fulfill.
Note: This process creates a preliminary proposal of how your credits will transfer. The actual course equivalency process occurs when you provide your study abroad adviser with the actual course syllabi when you are abroad or you return home. Just like at OSU, courses and schedules may be altered at your host universities, so you may not know your exact schedule of classes until you arrive. It is important that you keep in contact with your academic adviser and study abroad adviser regarding course equivalencies while you are abroad.
Transcript Evaluation and Credit Transfer
For students on an OSU-sponsored study abroad program, all courses successfully completed at host institutions for academic credit can be transferred back to OSU. Courses will be evaluated by the corresponding department chairs (e.g., an anthropology course taken at the University of Nottingham will need to be approved by the anthropology chair at OSU).
You will need to provide your OSU study abroad contact with copies of your course syllabi for all of the courses you take abroad. Without these documents, OSU cannot determine the official course equivalency for courses you have taken abroad. It is essential to provide these documents or your credits will not transfer back to OSU. You can e-mail, mail, or fax these documents back to OSU while you are abroad. If this is not possible, you can hand deliver them to your adviser immediately upon returning to OSU. It is also advisable to keep copies of all exams, papers, quizzes, presentations, and lecture notes from all of your courses. Once your adviser at OSU has these documents, he or she will work with the various departmental chairs to determine course equivalencies.
For some programs, the course equivalencies have been pre-approved. In rare cases, syllabi and other course documents are not needed. Check with your study abroad adviser if you need to provide these documents.
Western Culture/Cultural Diversity
Two courses at OSU are designed to help you get the most out of your study abroad experience and fulfill bacc core requirements at the same time. In addition to the courses you take abroad, you can take one of these courses offered through OSU.
ANTH 208/LING 208: Western Culture Study Abroad
This three-credit course is designed to guide you through the experience of living and studying in an unfamiliar cultural context for an extended period of time. To take this course, you must be a participant in an approved study abroad program or internship in which you will spend at least 10 weeks living in a Western cultural setting outside of the United States. Through journal entries, essays, and other documents you will explore and investigate cross-cultural experiences you will be having abroad.
ANTH 209/LING 209: Cultural Diversity Study Abroad
This three-credit course is designed to guide you through the experience of living and studying in an unfamiliar cultural context for an extended period of time. To take this course, you must be a participant in an approved study abroad program or internship in which you will spend at least 10 weeks living in a non-Western cultural setting outside of the United States. Through journal entries, essays, and other documents you will explore and investigate cross-cultural experiences you will be having abroad.
Before departing for your study abroad experience, contact Adele Kubein (kubeina@onid.orst.edu), who will be the instructor of these e-campus courses. *Note: These are e-campus courses and there will be a separate tuition for these credits. See e-campus fees.
Transcripts
Before departing your host country, make sure you have asked that your official transcripts to be sent to your OSU study abroad contact. If OSU does not receive an official transcript, your credits will not be transferred. If you do not have the address of your OSU contact, have your transcript send to:
International Degree and Education Abroad
444 Snell Hall
Corvallis, OR 97331
Once your transcript is received at OSU, it may take six to 12 weeks for the courses to appear on your OSU transcript. This process takes a long time as it involves many different academic units on campus. If you are graduating immediately after studying abroad, your graduation will be delayed until your study abroad credits appear on your OSU transcript.
If you plan to attend graduate school at anytime, be sure to order plenty of extra official transcripts from your host institution. Do not open them when you receive them or they are not considered official. It is very difficult to obtain additional copies of your transcript once you return to the U.S.
