National Taiwan University’s College of Bioresources and Agriculture.
NTU’s BACT Summer Program is held by the College of Bioresources and Agriculture. It combines biodiversity & agriculture exploration with thought-provoking “Exploring Taiwan” academic courses conducted by experienced university professors. Taught in English, the “Exploring Taiwan” courses help you to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s fauna, flora, agriculture, and cultural heritage and aim to provide a broad, well-rounded summer experience.

Location:

Taiwan, situated in subtropical and tropical Asia, is an island of 36,000 km2 and with coastal line stretching 1,100 km. Two thirds of Taiwan is covered with natural forests, and more than 200 peaks rise above 3,000 meters (10,000 ft). The highest mountain, Yushan, is about 4,000 m. Due to the high elevation difference, the climatic conditions and ecosystems are very different along the altitudinal gradient, producing a diverse and abundant wild fauna and flora. Geologically speaking, since Taiwan is a relatively young island, volcanic activity, gorge cleaving and rock formation are wonders still in action today. The Chinese culture that has been well preserved on the island has also intrigued its foreign visitors.

Program Details:

The NTU College of Bioresources and Agriculture is holding the "Biodiversity, Agriculture, and Culture of Taiwan Summer Program" for undergraduate and graduate students to explore Taiwan. The BACT Program is an approximately four-week structured program that provides students opportunities to learn about natural and cultural resources of Taiwan through a combination of lectures, field trips, and activities. Specific Program details are provided in the BACT Program Schedule posted on the NTU-CBA website each year. All Program courses and field trips are conducted in English, and students earn 6 credits. The Program explores diverse areas of Taiwan from the ocean intertidal zones to high elevation forests, where students see why and how a small island could be endowed with such high biodiversity. The program of study includes elements of forest, agricultural, and marine ecosystems, geography, cultural history, wood utilization, and more. The Program concludes with a multi-day group project based on what was learned throughout the Program, conducted in NTU’s Experimental Forest.
For more details, contact John Bliss, OSU-NTU BACT program coordinator.
