This is a College of Agricultural Sciences short-term faculty-led study abroad program that takes place in a different country and location each year.
For Summer 2014, the program will take place in Italy (Abruzzo and Umbria regions)
to be added.
Participants must be in good academic standing.
During Summer 2014, the College of Agricultural Sciences will lead a group of students on an Agri-Trekking Educational Tour of Italy, examining sustainable agriculture, food systems, and natural resources.
The program dates are Sept. 2-16, 2014. Participants will earn 2 credits.
Participants will experience the land and culture of the Apennine Mountains of Italy. The group will travel by foot, by train and by local buses to interact directly with this breathtaking landscape, visiting local agricultural and historical sites normally inaccessible to foreign travelers. Some days will invovle substantial walking segments. The group will learn about and taste many food products unique to Italy, including products produced with methods that reduce waste and energy consumption.
Planned activities may include: growing local vegetables and herbs, milking, feeding and sheering of sheep, cheese making, making of fresh pasta, production of olive oil and fruit marmalade, tending of vinyards, energy self-sufficiency and waste re-use on a solar energy based farm, production of Umbrian truffles, melon and sausage, visits to historic castles and monasteries built in medieval times.
Group lodging will be in various agritourism sites that are similar to a hostel or basic bed and breakfast.

Program fee: $2,200 (This includes lodging, meals, local transportation and admission fees.)
