Blagoevgrad is located in the southwestern corner of Bulgaria, at the foot of the three biggest Bulgarian mountains - Rila, Pirin and the Rhodopes. At the major city in the region, Blagoevgrad serves as a key international crossroads connecting Bulgaria with nearby Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. The Bulgarian capital of Sofia is only 100km (62 miles) away. Blagoevgrad is a picturesque city of 80,000 with a charming pedestrian downtown area noted for its preserved 19-century architecture, numerous restaurants, cafes, and vibrant nightlife.

According to returned study abroad students, international travel from Blagoevgrad is easy, cheap, and fun. Sofia is only 80 minutes away by bus. The buses are very modern and clean.
