Admission Requirements

1. A minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA after completing at least 32 credit hours of college-level courses and good standing within your department, college and the University. The dean of your college may give you special consideration if you fall below this minimum. See the International Degree Office for more information about this process.

2. Proficiency in a foreign language equivalent to that attained by the end of a second-year language sequence (ie. 213) at OSU. This may be evidenced in one of the following ways:

  • Successful completion of four or more years of consecutive study of the same foreign language at the high school level preceding admission to Oregon State University;
  • Completion of the AP College Board test in a foreign language with a score of 4 or 5;
  • Completion of the third term of a second-year foreign language sequence at OSU or at another accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 or better. For this course to count it must constitute a minimum of 4 quarter or 3 semester hours.
  • Completion of one term of a third-year foreign language course (i.e., any course designated 311, 312 or 313) at OSU or another accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 or better. For this course to count it must constitute a minimum of 3 quarter or 2 semester hours.
  • If you are a foreign student whose native language is not English and you wish to use English to satisfy the foreign language entrance requirement, you will have satisfied the entrance requirement upon admission to OSU.
  • For any language not offered at OSU, you may satisfy the foreign language entrance requirement by either:
  • Demonstrating end of second-year level proficiency in a foreign language by passing a proficiency test administered by a certified international language proficiency tester; or
  • Demonstrating end of second-year level achievement in a foreign language through successfully completing an achievement test administered by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at OSU.

3. Meet any additional requirements established by your major department or college.

You may be admitted to the program as a pre-International Degree student if you meet all the requirements listed above except completion of the two year language requirement. Follow the normal application process to be admitted in the pre-International Degree category. You will be accepted with conditional status and be eligible for all program benefits except scholarships.

Business - The college has set additional requirements for acceptance into the International Degree Program. Please check with Carol Leder in the Advising Office (Bexell 214) for more information.

Engineering - You can apply for the International Degree as a pre-engineering major. Apply to the department in which you will be completing your professional program.

Foreign Languages & Literatures- If you intend to be a foreign language major and want to apply for the International Degree program, you must first complete 9 credits of upper-division foreign language course work in order to be accepted by the department as a foreign language major.

Health & Human Sciences - You must be admitted into a professional major program before applying for the International Degree. Check with your adviser about the requirements for these programs.

The Colleges of Agricultural Sciences, Forestry, Liberal Arts (except Foreign Languages) and Science currently do not have any specific requirements for acceptance into the International Degree.

Special Notes about Admission

If you change majors after admission to the International Degree Program, you will have to re-apply for admission to the International Degree Program in your new department.

If you are pursuing two degrees besides the International Degree, you only need to apply for the International Degree in one department (PDF). The choice of departments is up to you, but you should consult your advisers before determining where to apply.
