Photo of Letti HilebrandHow did you decide to go to OSU?

My dad first accompanied me to Oregon and I loved the country side. The weather is similar to Germany’s weather, and OSU has the only veterinary school in Oregon. I love Oregon State University.

What do you especially like about OSU and/or what have been your favorite experiences at OSU so far?

I like the older buildings around here and I love the green areas around campus where you can sit and relax, near the Memorial Union and the library. I like the personal and informal relationships with faculty advisors who are easy going and approachable. I like to location too, as it is right in between Portland and Eugene. The International Cultural Service Program that I participate in is involving but fun work, and OSU football games are an experience!

How has studying in the US and at OSU changed you?

I’ve gained a great deal of independence, even though advisors are there too, to lead you and act as your mentor. People are friendly and outgoing – it’s very similar to Germany.

How do you believe studying at OSU will help you in the future and impact your career plans?

I want to work as a vet. And I don’t want to limit my education to Germany only. With a German veterinary degree, you can’t work here in the U.S., and with an American degree you can’t work in Germany. I began vet school in Germany and decided to work toward a degree in Oregon. I like not just the academic aspect of it but the everyday aspect of it. I am VP and Secretary of the OSU Dressage Team (Olympic Discipline), and a member of Pre-Vet Club and Tau Sigma Honors Society. These activities keep me busy.

What advice do you have for future students?

As far as housing, don’t seek out people from your own nationality only. It’s important to have the US experience so try and find friends who are American instead of limiting yourself to your culture. Be really open and you’ll discover that people are very interested in other countries and experiences. People are often very excited to talk about their own travels to Europe and it’s a great way of meeting people. ICSP is a great program, not just for the scholarship but also the people you get to meet.
