petroleum company, Texaco, in the Ecuadorian Amazon from 1964 to the present. Within
the context of the global economy this paper evaluates the power differentiation and the
ecological impacts which occurred. The focus is to demonstrate that Texaco and the
Ecuadorian government allowed excessive environmental destruction to take place in the
Ecuadorian Amazon, where many indigenous peoples live, all in the interest of economic
gain. Texaco, the United States government, international financial institutions, the
Ecuadorian government, and the indigenous populations of the Ecuadorian Amazon are
examined as to their position within the global economic hierarchy. A lawsuit brought
against Texaco by the indigenous tribes offers an example of an effort to overcome the
imbalance of power and its negative impacts. The present trend of the globalization of the
economy is also evaluated in the conclusion of this project. Finally, some ideas for
solutions to the problems discussed in this paper are offered.
