Yaroslavl’s economic abase has long been heavy industry. Today, industrial pollution is threatening the city’s main drinking water source, the Volga River, and adverse public health effects are already apparent. According to recent reports, the health status of local residents in Yaroslavl is poor and is getting worse.
Most of the information was gathered in Yaroslavl. My sources were government reports, newspaper articles, and data provided by a local environment group.
The intent of this study is to focus attention on what I believe is perhaps the most serious problem in Yaroslavl’s future, the degradation of the Volga River.
